Transfer images from iphone directly into external memory

I barely have enough space in my phone and I'm trying to get rid of all the images to clean the device. My computer doesn't have enough space either to receive all the images (we are talking beyond 40gb). I have an external memory I could transfer it to, yet all methods I tried failed. I tried copying from folder to folder and I also tried using the Photos app. With the Photos app I almost do it, but after a while the transfer failed because the iphone disconnected (when it didn't) and so I was only able to get half of all the photos.

I'd appreciate any help you can offer. Thank you.

Do you have an external drive with enough room to store your photos? If you do then connect your iPhone to your Mac, launch Image Capture, select the photos you want to download, select the folder on the external drive and download.

WARNING: do not delete the photos from the iPhone until you verify that the download to the external drive was successful. There have been too many aborted downloads and completed deletions to assume that it's safe to do so without verification.

If you need additional external storage consider one of the many options offered by OWC (MacSales.com) either SSD or HDD type.
