How does focus work on iphone?
It appears that my phone won't ring while the focus is on.

Correct. Focus is an extension of Do not Disturb, so prevents notifications and calls from actively alerting you. If you want calls to ring turn off focus, or set the focus rules so calls and messages from certain people or apps can get through.
