Switch between windows on my screen

Hi there! I am coming from a linux computer, so keyboard shortcut warrior here :). I would like to ask you if there is a shortcut ( or an app to install ) to switch between the windows that are opened on my screen. I am not talking about cmd+tab, because the cmd+tab arranges apps based on last opened.

Let's say I have the calendar on my left and the mail on my right side of the screen. I have 10 apps in the background. I am focused on the calendar app and I want to go, via keyboard shortcut, to mail. Is there a way to do this? If I press alt+tab, I have to cycle through the apps, which defeats the purpose of being fast and productive. Thank you!

Command-Tab press and release will alternate between the 2 most recent apps.

Command-Tab app list is ordered by how recently you accessed an app, so cycling through apps would only be necessary if you had not accessed the app recently.

There is an app on github called alttab that offers a different approach to window switching. Not sure if it would be to your liking or not.

Greetings from another keyboard shortcut fan 😎

The best way, as I understand it, is for you to create your own specific shortcuts, e.g., say, Command-Control-Option-M to switch to Mail, regardless of where Mail happens to be. Would that work for you?

Of course, you can create other shortcuts for other oft-used applications. That way they are never far away. They can even be launched if not yet running. Would that be interesting?

I would suggest not to overdo it, though - for example, assign your preferred shortcuts for a few more used applications, and resort to Command-Tab for the rest - also, Command-Tab works cyclically, and you can use the arrow keys to reach any application very quickly: for example, if you move left from the leftmost application you immediately reach the rightmost one. So the average "distance" is about a quarter of the running applications, not one half:

And how, may you ask, can you assign a keyboard shortcut to switch directly to an application (say, to Mail)?

You can use Automator or Shortcuts to do that. Let us know if you want assistance on doing that.

Sorry for butting in, but thanks so much for that tip, Luis! I've been using Macs for longer than I can remember, and regularly use Command-Tab...but I'm ashamed to say that I never thought to use the arrow keys while Command-Tabbing. How incredibly useful, and really quite obvious! It just goes to show that one never stops learning! Cheers, Ian.
