Can't select AirPrint Printer after iOS 17 Update

When I try to print the no printer selected is displayed, when I select the printer it starts to connect but the no printer selected comes back. There is a printer there and has worked previously, is this something because of an update?

There is a printer there but it does not pick it up, it was fine last week. Is this because of an update?

Success! I turned off private IP address and that did not help. However I did update the firmware on my Canon D570. And now I can print!

From the front panel of my Canon D570, press Menu button, scroll to System Management settings, press OK, scroll to Update Firmware, Press OK, scroll to Via Internet, press OK. Answer OK to terms.

updated in less than 5 minutes.

I attempted to print for the first time since the iOS 17.1.1 update. My iphone 12 Pro Max can find my Canon MF260, but it will not stay selected and print.

I double checked the network settings and reboot my router, printer, and phone. I had not changed anything and was able to print prior to the cellphone iOS update.

I downloaded the file to my PC and the file printed just fine. It appears there is a definite glitch in the iOS update and it appears there are others having issues with the update as well.

I resolve this exact issue by turning off “Safe WEB under Internet Security” in Norton360. I retested by turning it back on and issue returned so I turned it off when I want to print. No change with IOS 17.1.2 today.

I’m still calling this an Apple IOS 17 issue since it has never occurred with IOS 15 or 16.

Hi,

This has been posted in the macOS Earlier Operating Systems forum, but your profile indicates iPhone 11 and iOS 17.

Please post back with information about the exact device(s) and/or Mac computer(s) in use. Also, the exact operating system version(s).

Furthermore, answering a question about printing is much easier if the printer model is known.

In the meantime, if an AirPrint printer is used, you may want to carry out a test with the following procedure (in this order, with these waiting times, do not forget the router):

Power off the Wi-Fi router, the printer, all iPhones and iPads, all Macs, and any other computers/devices. Wait two to three minutes. Power on the router. Wait two to three minutes. Power on the printer. Wait a minute or two. Power on all iPhones and iPads, and all Macs. Finally, power on any other computers/devices. Any change?

Camerleytone: This is same error message (no printer selected) that I am getting, but only on my iPadPro with iOS 17.2. My ancient iPhone 7+ which is running iOS 15.7.9 prints just fine - no error message. That’s why I think the problem is related to the newer OS just downloaded on iPadPro. I have tried printing to my Brother HL-L8350CDW series AND my HP ENVY Photo 7800 series F96EDF. Before the new iOS on iPadPro, I did not have one problem printing to either one of these printers. I am going to try turning everything off like suggested below. I hope it works.

Hi dfiles1947,

Thank you for the information. As I wrote already September 22, there had been other reports about problems in connection with the iOS 17 upgrade. The power-cycle procedure (which often can help solving AirPrint device discovery difficulties) was merely a test here, but it does not appear to have made a difference in several cases. Additional things that have been suggested include checking that a VPN is not used and that the private Wi-Fi address feature is not on. It may be necessary to wait for yet another update.

Hi,

You may want to check that this AirPrint-supported printer has the latest firmware. If not, try an update.

Also, you could try a full power-cycle sequence (including the router, printer and iPhone). Furthermore, if applicable, check whether there is a change with VPN and/or private Wi-Fi address off.

If nothing else works, it may be worth testing the Brother Print&Scan iOS app (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/brother-iprint-scan/id382775642), at least as a temporary/limited solution.

Hi BigKurt,

Both printers, MFC-J870DW and MFC-J1010DW, are listed in About AirPrint - Apple Support (en-us, November 13, 2023).

Regarding AirPrint troubleshooting, you may want to have a look at the following user tip by Lawrence Finch:

AirPrint Troubleshooting - Apple Community

If nothing else works, you could perhaps also try the Brother iPrint&Scan app or Brother Mobile Connect (the latter for MFC-J1010DW).

This is a user-to-user forum. Do not expect Apple to participate here. If necessary, please contact Apple support, or Brother, directly.

Hi Nana2kbb,

You do not say which HP printer model it is, nor what you have tried.

Please take another look at the replies (on both pages) above.

Since different things appear to have worked for different users, it is difficult to say what exactly could be causing these problems.

You may want to check

  • that you have the absolutely latest iOS update,
  • whether turning off VPN (if applicable) would change anything,
  • whether turning off the private Wi-Fi address feature (if applicable) would change anything,
  • whether the full power-cycle sequence test (described earlier) leads to a positive result, and
  • whether a printer firmware update (if available) could be a solution.
