Can't select AirPrint Printer after iOS 17 Update

When I try to print the no printer selected is displayed, when I select the printer it starts to connect but the no printer selected comes back. There is a printer there and has worked previously, is this something because of an update?

There is a printer there but it does not pick it up, it was fine last week. Is this because of an update?

I spent over 30 years doing computer support, that included iPhones from way back.

No this is not an error with my printer (not really), one things and only one thing changed in my setup, I updated my phone to the latest iOS. Now it is possible that Apple make a change to Air Print, but in doing the change they missed some thing for backwards compatibility. Yes it is possible that there is a change in AirPrint that can be made on the printer, no there is not an update available at this time for my printer (Dell E525W). The printer is 5 to 10 years old, the most current firmware was designed around the current AirPrint specification at that time. No I do not have any VPN on my phone. Yes private WiFi address is enabled, but it worked with this before the iOS 17 update, (I disabled it and tested, no joy). Yes the phone, network equipment, and printer have been power cycled.

This is an iOS 17 update issue, Apple made some minor change in AirPrint that had disrupted connections to older printers, not all printers but some older printer. The symptoms are that when you go to printer, you select the printer, the printer is seen by your phone, it is listed as an available printer (is broadcasting that is it an AirPrint printer), when it is selected the phone returns to the print screen but in the selected printer field it still says "no printer selected".

Now it is possible there is a setting that can be changed in the AirPrint Settings on the printer that will fix this. But the bottom line is this all worked before iOS 17 and fails after iOS 17. If it is an AirPrint setting on the printer, why hasn't Apple released this setting information. What bothers me is I have not see Apple replay to this issue, it is being reported by many people, they should tells us they recognize the issue and are looking into it. They can tell me they made a change to AirPrint and printer manufactures need to release and update. They can tell us something, nope crickets.

I am having the same problem after the iOS 17 l.1.2 update. I have an iphone SE 2020. Printer canonMF230 . I tried all the restarts as instructed several times, cannot print from my phone but can print from iPad that doesn’t have iOS 17. When I try to print the no printer selected is displayed, when I select the printer it starts to connect but the no printer selected comes back. My son is having the same problem from his phone iPhone 11 after same update. We are on same network/wifi with no vpn.

Same problem here

ios 17.x.x does not select the printer

(no method to downgrade or revert to older iOS which was working)

the same printer is working fine with older iOS devices that I have

Moreover, to solve this problem, why should i be required to connect to printer website through their app? My printer is working fine not connected to internet, it had been working fine with this device too, si why the feature has been removed (doesn’t look like a bug, because if it was, it would have been fixed with new version, or reverting to older versions should have been available)

If it’s any consolation, you’re not alone. This last weekend, my phone showed an auto update coming, seemingly nothing out of the ordinary. I let it do its thing, as usual. Monday comes and I try to do a simple (remember how easy “simple” used to be?) type and print. Won’t connect to the printer any more, and so far the things that worked for others isn’t working on my not-new-but-otherwise-splendid HP Envy 5540. It’s beyond frustrating for non-tech-advantaged folks to have to spend hours trying to figure it out.

Thank heavens for pen and paper.

I have an IPhone 12. Just updated with 17.1.2 as requested by my work. I have used AirPrint to my home printer for the last 3 years no problem.

After new software my airprint with my Epson WF-3820 no longer works. I have tried re starting router, forget and reset all networks, turning all devices on and off. NO GO.

fortunately my Epson apps work on the iPhone but AirPrint was easier to use and now I can’t find my printer in AirPrint.

As much as I hate to say it. The only thing that worked for me was to update the firmware on my printers. Sure Apple broke it but keeping firmware up to date is important. It covers bug fixes and security issues (Can you tell I worked in IT for years lol). The bad news is that many of the consumer printer manufacturers don't make it easy to determine how to update the firmware. Canon being one of them. I even contacted their support org and they couldn't tell me how to do it. I found the answer in this forum.

I do not want to update my Epson firmware yet because it is letting me use knock off printer cartridges. Once I switch to Epson cartridges I will update the firmware on the printer. I did get Epson Smart Panel to work on my iPhone and now I can print using that app rather than air printer which stopped working with the new software upgrade. That will get me by for now. Very annoying situation. And my work required me to do the software upgrade!!!

Success - Finally!!

after unsuccessfully trying every rational suggestion in the book, eg shut down network, printer etc and reboot in appropriate order - no joy!

out of frustration, selected another printer on the network, got same error message, then reselected the original printer - bingo - it works!

not sure what Apple has done in this update, but after switching nearly everything to Apple after years of being told how seamlessly devices connect and work as opposed to the mess that is the Windows operating system - it figures that I have a nearly unsolvable problem!!

Using Epson Printers

After the IOS 17... updates, on iPhone 12 ProMax - tried everything under the sun. Thought finally had solved issue after shutting down printer, router & modem, then turning back on in order of modem, router & printer. would work SOME of the time afterwards. Also found that if I change from one printer to another, then back to the one that I want to use, waiting for confirmation after each change, then I can usually print. My wife is on the same network with an iPhone 13 Pro and never has any problem. WHAT DID YOU DO APPLE!!!
