i cant update or download an app because of the payment method??
it will keep telling me to add a payment method and i did add my phone number it didnt accept it?? i cant even update or download a free app?

You have to have a valid payment tied to your Apple Account in order to download apps, even free apps. That means add a credit or debit card (if your bank supports Apple Pay) or put money into your Apple Cash account.
