I am in the process of buying an new macbook Air. How do I transfer my files to the new Mac from my 2014 macbook pro

You could use Migration Assistant: Transfer to a new Mac with Migration Assistant - Apple Support

Or you could just copy the files you want transferred to an attached external drive then connect the drive to your new Mac.

Or you could use an online serice like iCloud, etc.
