How to drag windows into full screen mode?

If I remember correctly, I was previously able to drag windows into full screen mode like this:

  • Grab a window by the top bar.
  • Drag it onto the menu bar to enter Mission Control.
  • Drop it on another full screen thumbnail to go into split view, or onto the new desktop icon on the right.

However, this doesn't seem to work reliably anymore. Often after dropping the small window that's being dragged doesn't merge into the split view or full screen, but just hangs there. Moving the cursor after releasing the mouse button seems to have some kind of an effect on what happens next, but I encourage everyone to try it themselves.

I know there are other ways to manage windows. But how do I enter split view or full screen by dragging a window into Mission Control? I have restarted my Mac.
