Apple Music erratic playback

Streaming music via HomePod Mini (mostly Big Band orchestras) tracks are regularly cut short or re-started for no apparent reason. Recently (since latest HomePod update?) the track currently playing as displayed on my iPhone is out of sync with the track playing by around 30 seconds. Both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network and in the same location. Any suggestions as to how I can narrow down the cause of the problem?

Hi mike_bp,

A good first step in troubleshooting any device concern is to restart the unit. If HomePod or HomePod mini isn't responding describes that process as:

"Restart HomePod or HomePod mini

  1. Open the Home app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
  2. Tap or click HomePod, then tap or click the Settings button.
  3. If you have two HomePod speakers set up as a stereo pair, select Restart HomePod. If your HomePod speaker is not set up as a stereo pair, select Reset HomePod, then select Restart HomePod.

If you don't see an option to restart your HomePod, unplug it from power, then plug it back in and try again.

If HomePod still doesn't respond, reset it."

If unsuccessful, further isolation would prove helpful. You mentioned a specific genre of music, but are other genres impacted? If you start the song on your iPhone and use AirPlay to stream to the HomePod, are these issues present? Do they occur at all on the iPhone?

The results of these steps would be valuable to continue investigating with Apple Support directly.

Regards.

I’m not a fan of the turn it off and back on approach so I checked further and it seems to happen in our Kitchen (I have other HomePods and Apple TVs around the house but no other HomePod Mini). I noticed that in the Home app on my iPhone the HomePod Mini is also shown as a Favourite. I don’t know why this was the case but turning it off seems to have addressed the problem. It is certainly the case that the tune playing on the HomePod and the track information on my iPhone are now in sync whereas before the track information was out of sync by about 30 seconds. As I said I have other combinations of devices that I use to stream Apple Music and I need to check all of these but the Favourite configuration was unique to the Kitchen location so at least I have something to work on.
