Messages notifications random
I’ve been having this issue for years. Sometimes I get notifications from messages and sometimes I do not. I have switched phones, upgraded iOS and nothing seems to work.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. In addition to your iPhone, do you have an Apple Watch? If so, that may explain what's happening. When you use an Apple Watch, where the notifications appear will depend on whether or not your iPhone is unlocked. That would explain why it seems intermittent. The following from Notifications on your Apple Watch - Apple Support addresses this.
"If your iPhone is unlocked, you get notifications on your iPhone instead of your Apple Watch.
If your iPhone is locked or asleep, you get notifications on your Apple Watch, unless your Apple Watch is locked."
If you don't use an Apple Watch, check your notification settings - Change message notifications on iPhone - Apple Support. Also, check to see if Focus is enabled. If so, there may be contacts that are allowed and some that aren't during your Focus. The guidance in Use Focus on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support can help.
