Moving a mid-2011 iMac to Linux

My mid 2011 iMac still works well, but Apple no longer supports it. I would very much love to learn Linux and to move this fine machine to that OS, probably Linux Mint. I have tried but failed to install Linux on the iMac. Any help locating information to help me walk through and complete the installation would be greatly appreciated.

I tried recently. Everything works fine with "Ubuntu Studio" – except SOUND/AUDIO. This is a disaster. I've tried several distributions before and hoped, Ubuntu Studio was optimized for sound/audio related settings and /or configuration. But it isn't. It sounds terrible and I'm not able at all to adjust it, regardless which distribution I've used. I'm not a Linux-expert, however tried to improve it with tutorials and so forth. But no success. Alsa, alsamixer, pulseeffects, pulseaudio etc... it does not work the way it should. Finally I gave up and ordered a LG Smart TV now.
