My iMac has the M1 chip running Ventura 13.5.2 macOS. I have external speakers I'd like to add but there is no connection that I can see. The only connection I have is a headphone connection.

The headphone out is also used to connect external speakers. But the speakers do need to be powered (amplified), not just any plain old speaker. There are lots of external speakers built for use with personal computers, in all price ranges.

Two ways:
In either case, you're going to need amplified speakers, or an amplifier/receiver + speaker arrangement, like in a home stereo system.
