Search function in apple mail does no longer werk since update Ventura, even after most recent version update

Hi! I just upgraded to the latest version of Sonoma 14.1.2, and suddenly, I, too, cannot search my emails. I tried your suggestions above but to no avail; I am still unable to search. Is there anything else I can try? Thank you!

We have exactly the same problem: there is no way to search for emails on our M2 Macbook Air. The flagged emails folder doesn't work either. On our Mac Studio however, everything works as usual. Strange, because both have the exact some Mac OS (Sonoma 14.1.2 ) ...

Please fix!!! People and businesses rely on these basic functions and we certainly can't loose time troubleshooting.

Thanks ddtmm! This problem was getting to be a real problem. Running the Rebuild command on various mailboxes had no visible effect.

I tried the commands, then immediately did another search for a single word. Lots came up, but nothing after 2021...the behavior I'd seen before. Then as I watched, additional (later) results started to display as the indexing found them.

Thank you. Just wanted to add, that having tried many things this is the one that worked for me (running Big Sur on old machine). went into Terminal, put in password, put in first line above and return, then second and return and bingo it worked. Many thanks!

Sorry it is not working for you (and for repeating myself!). I am v much a novice and just followed this advice which I got from somewhere else, I think. I do not know the complete path - I just typed in those two lines into terminal and it worked. This was probably a month or two ago and it still works for me, Sorry not to be of more help.

Wow!! It worked.... After limping along for over a year, having tried everything else I could find, this worked... Search in my email started to work pretty soon after the restart, yet messaging took another couple of days, maybe less... Today, it all works as it used to.... Thanks very much!!

I hope someone from APPLE checks in here. This is a HUGE problem that has me looking for solutions on a different platform! My thousands of mails are in folders, subfolders - + inbox so I can track conversations back to earlier meetings etc.

Search not working affects my WHOLE WORKFLOW! I have 1 older computer that I now cannot update for fear of loosing search there as well. NONE of the work-arounds mentioned here are restoring search for me.

Can someone on the APPLE TEAM please make this a priority + solve the bug!?

Totally agree. I’ve installed all the recent updates but Apple Mail search still not working. I don’t understand how something so important in this app isn’t being picked up by Apple and a bug fix issued 🤷🏻‍♀️. So frustrating. I have to get my iPad or iPhone out whenever I want to search Mail - works fine on those but not on iMac.

I tried all of these and am still not able to use the search function as I used to. Currently, when I search it will list the mailboxes that contain the term, but not search within the mailbox. General text is no longer working and I can no longer search for all emails from a specific address. I have not updated my operating system, but started experiencing this issue this week.

The procedure that involves deselecting Mail from Search and restarting worked for me - thank you! I tried the Terminal tip first, because it was easier/quicker, but had no luck with that. Thanks anyway to those who posted that. Glad it worked for others.

Can you post the discrete steps you followed to do this? I have the same issue (updated to 13.6.1 a few days ago), but am only cursorily familiar with Mac under the hood.
