I need to retrieve some files from trash only problem is that I can't find the trash. I can move things there and empty it - but cannot see it or the contents. It is not in the dock and I have tried using finder's go to function but this does not show it (even using ~/.trash as was suggested elsewhere)
Any thoughts?
I would be keen to get it back in to the dock too.

old issue, new issue, what changed?
Are you saying you can not click open the Trash can on the right side of the Dock?
You have no Trash can on the right side of the Dock?
