Apple Watch Battery Drain Issues after Update

Since updating to WatchOS 10.0.1, the watch battery charges only to 80% overnight and the battery drains more quickly than before the update. I also updated my iPhone 14 pro to iOS 17 around the same time. Would this impact the watch battery?

Here’s my situation today:

  • wake up at 6 am: watch is at 100%
  • get in car at 7:20 am: watch is at 91%
  • sit motionless for four hours
  • at 11:30, walk around for approximately two hours (no workout being tracked)
  • sit motionless for another two hours
  • by 3:30 pm, watch is at 56%, having only been looked at 6-7 times. There were no functions engaged, only one alert shown, no workouts tracked, and WiFi is turned off.
  • since I have to leave the office at 4 and drive for about 3 hours, I fully expect that by 7:30 pm tonight my watch will be dead, having not done anything at all today.

I have updated my phone OS also.

Before this update, my watch lasted until 12 am-1 am, which included a minimum 2 hours of workout tracking and many activations.

this is an utter joke. Nobody can use a watch that can’t last 10 hours even when it’s not tracking anything.

another issue for me. Other than my battery capacity. Which still sucks. Even after reset, dumping all the 3rd party apps and having to stop using fitness app. No my watch gets hot and only charged to 60%. I don’t think Apple is going to help. Steve Jobs would be ashamed of this level of customer service. It’s your fault not ours is how I get treated when dealing with my internet provider. Apple should be better.

Before update:

Watch could easily hold its charge for the whole day. I put it on the charger every night at 9pm. Then put it on at night to monitor my sleep. Keep it on all day receiving multiple notifications for my workouts and everything else.

After update:

Watch won’t charge over 80%

Watch won’t keep its charge.

Now it won’t even charge…

Message to Apple: please correct this update.

I wish people who are trying to help would stop recommending procedures that don't exist as this only adds to the frustration so many of us are already experiencing. There's no such thing as a "hard reset" on Apple Watch. You can shut it down and restart it, you can unpair and re-pair it with your phone, you can erase watch contents and settings, reset the home screen layout, and reset the sync data. These are our actual options.

Also, your watch is automatically populated with apps installed on your phone. If there's a way to prevent that from happening it hasn't been explained by anyone.

I think it's great that removing third party apps such as the Moby Fox app is helping some. I have never had any third party apps or watch faces and still experiencing battery drain. I did eliminate my weather app and it helped, but what's the point of having a watch that needs to be with only the bare minimum of apps so it can operate properly? That's not why we purchased this expensive watch, a simple Timex could also just tell time.

Called Apple Support.

The guy took control of the screen on my iPhone.

Showed me where to click.

We ran a diagnostic and repair on my Apple Watch.

Don’t know what was done but now my battery is like new.

Took 30 minutes to charge at 100% and now it’s barely losing %.

Lost 4% in 3 hours.

Therefore, when all else fails, call support. 👍🏻

Since last update (10.1) my apple watch SE 2nd gen. less than 1 year old, drains battery within a couple of hours and is kinda useless to wear even during the night when waking up the watch battery is fully empty.

When I want to charge it it can only charge up to around 50% and then it's seen as too hot to charge further. So every time I have to wait until it's not to hot anymore to charge further.

I have no 3rd part apps 🤷🏼‍♀️ The only way I can get my watch to hold a battery and be useful is to uninstall or turn off anything that uses location services. Which sucks because I liked having the temperature and conditions on my watch face. Basically my watch is just a watch now, although it still works as my alarm and alerts me to texts, so glorified watch.

So after updating to 10.1 my battery life on both my Ultra and Series 5 plummeted. My Series 5 went from 100% charge to 5% in 3 hours. My Ultra would not charge fully Friday, and Saturday I tried a hard restart and it’s became a brick. Stuck at the Apple logo… I have tried a hard restart several times and it just goes back to the logo. I have tried charging for a few hours and hard restart and same result.

Someone else came up with this and it seems to have worked for my SE model watch. I’m running 10.1 on my watch. I updated my phone to 17.1 and then unpaired and re-paired my watch. They were specific about making sure your phone was updated before you unpaired and re-paired your watch. Afterwards I also did a hard reset (push the bezel and the button down until you see the Apple) and then charged it. I also deleted any 3rd party apps. My watch seems to be holding a charge much better than it did (I’ll keep my fingers crossed). FYI: My watch charged without a problem. It just wouldn’t stay charged.

Yes, I was talked into buying one at the Apple Store and once I set it up it lasted 4 hours instead of 3 ( series 7 vs series 9). I took off 90% of my third party apps and the new watch lasted the entire day. From 100% in the morning down to 52% about 12 hours later and I used the workout activity during the day. Probably would of lasted over 24 hours.
