Since updating to WatchOS 10.0.1, the watch battery charges only to 80% overnight and the battery drains more quickly than before the update. I also updated my iPhone 14 pro to iOS 17 around the same time. Would this impact the watch battery?

As many here I was affected by the constant battery drain of approx. 5% per hour and I think I found what was causing this for me.
When I checked the Watch App on my phone ==> General ==> About it showed that it synced 15 photos even though I have not selected any photos or albums to sync.
Opening the photos app on the watch confirmed that and showed that there are no photos on the watch.
I then selected an album with one picture to sync and the photo count went up to 16. Next I created a photo watch face and set it to dynamic and suddenly the watch showed random pictures that I never selected to sync. I searched for these photos on my iPhone and deleted them from there until the watch only showed 1 picture being synced, which was the one from the album. I then changed the watch face back from dynamic to album and left the face on the watch.
I did this on Tuesday. Yesterday, on Wednesday my watch was at 37% after wearing it without additional charging for almost 17 hours. Usually it would have been dead after 14 hours max. Today I took the watch off the charger at 7:30, at 8:41 it jumped to 99% where it would have been at 94% or even less before and now at 12:30 it is still at 87% which is 2.6%/hour.
I think the constant photo sync would be a good explanation for this issue as the watch would constantly download new pictured from the phone and would index them. In addition to that it would also explain why not everyone is affected by this since this would not apply to people having their photo sync configured to sync specific albums rather than the watch syncing random photos when nothing is selected for the photo sync. And it would also explain why resetting the watch doesn't help to fix this issue since the watch would start randomly syncing photos again after the reset.
Might be worth to check/try for others.
Excuse me for my ignorance, you mentioned 10.1 beta… why did you say beta? Did you sign up for beta? How did you do that? I got my update the day before yesterday from the general >software update and it did not warn me that it was a beta software. They should not release on software update a beta software.
You have to go on the Apple website and sign up for beta. You get the updates before most for testing and developing. Developers get it first and testers next. Then the public. I’ve done it for years. Tested and give feedback. This is the first major issues I’ve had beta and it bled over to the public update too.
I’ve seen people posting about eliminating third party faces like MobyFace and Facer. I happen to have a year long subscription to Facer. Why should we have to compromise with Apple about how we use or customize our watches when I have had my series 7 and used both these third party apps for better than 2 years without incident? Apple made promises about the increased functionality in their new hardware and software releases but we have to compromise how we were choosing to use our devices because their garbage software updates no longer support it? I am the customer who trusted their propaganda! If they can’t give me the functionality they promised, they can kiss my *** if they think I’m going to bend over backwards to keep their inferior product. They owe me a quality product; I owe them nothing, certainly not extreme loyalty when they’ve broken faith with me!
I didn’t go to any website and didn’t sign up for anything. I just updated from settings > software update and bum 💥 yet 5 of the six technicians fro Apple, and even the record before I tamed to them told me I had a beta software. One, a senior one told me that he didn’t know what kind of software I had but he told me that I wouldn’t get beta if I didn’t signed up for it. AND I DID NOT.
My Watch Drains to fast! Brand new Ultra 2 and it drained less than 6 hours. WTF! This new update 10.1 messed something up. Im Not happy, and what the point of having this Ultra Watch 2 if it's draining fast now.
After about one month and the delivered updates, I’m happy to say that my watch battery is much more functional (but I don’t think it’s fully back to where it was previously). I’m still having a few random issues of the screen being unresponsive but it’s not overwhelming.
This. Don’t blame Apple for third party software thats poorly written or not updated. This happens all the time. On the Mac there used to be webpages devoted to what apps will still work after a major update. This is nothing new.
That is exactly what I told the technician over the phone! I never signed up for beta. How did I get that update? The only real help I got was taking it into the store where they actually listened to me.
The good news is that I believe the Genius Bar tech realized that it’s a huge problem. I refused to pay to have my watch fixed because it wasn’t my fault. We will see how it is when I get it back next week. But I will not install a new update until I make sure it fixes the bug in this one.
You are entitled to your opinion and I fully respect that but if you buy a app at the App Store you should trust that Apple aproves it.
I create videos for non profit organizations and also for individuals that can afford to pay a professional to make video of their weddings, graduation, vacation or wedding anniversary. I do it for free I just request a small donation to 3 of the foundations and charity organization that I support. So I have many software that is not sold on the Apple Store because just iMovie and Final Cut Pro is not enough and I can’t afford Adobe. When I download these apps I know the risk and I also know how to fully uninstall them (not just take to the trash, that lives tones of things behind). I am aware of the risk and I am pretty go in dealing with it. But when you buy from the Apple Store? These apps are approved by apple and I am sure they make a commission on it therefore they are responsible.
I have good news and bad news. I wento go a walk with my walker and the battery drained more than usual but not horrible. The bad new is that it took a while for the satellite to connect.
A tip for physically challenged people like me that needs to walk with a walker but want to register your walks. Move you watch to you ankle.
I'm having the same issue, after installing the latest update on my Apple Watch Ultra 2, before the update my battery would last almost 3 days and now it's only lasting for a few hours. I hope that they resolve this problem quickly.
Thanks, I think this happened last time and resetting worked, but are we going to have to go through this stupid time-consuming process every time we get an update?

I do, however, get to 100% charge - not sure about the 80% charge mentioned by folks below.
Used to get 24+ hours, easily, on my V7 Watch. Now I can almost watch the battery drain.
Charged before bed last night - woke up 4a, not working/drained, put on charger. Fully charged at 8a 100%, currently 9:30 and already down to 73%.
I got an Ultra and I'm used to get over 2 days of battery life and in the last days I'm only getting 7 to 8 hours of battery!!! Today I put my watch on at 6:30am and now at 11:30am I have only 8% left on the battery so I got a 800$ bracelet on my wrist for the rest of the day!!!
