Apple Watch Battery Drain Issues after Update

Since updating to WatchOS 10.0.1, the watch battery charges only to 80% overnight and the battery drains more quickly than before the update. I also updated my iPhone 14 pro to iOS 17 around the same time. Would this impact the watch battery?

As many here I was affected by the constant battery drain of approx. 5% per hour and I think I found what was causing this for me.

When I checked the Watch App on my phone ==> General ==> About it showed that it synced 15 photos even though I have not selected any photos or albums to sync.

Opening the photos app on the watch confirmed that and showed that there are no photos on the watch.

I then selected an album with one picture to sync and the photo count went up to 16. Next I created a photo watch face and set it to dynamic and suddenly the watch showed random pictures that I never selected to sync. I searched for these photos on my iPhone and deleted them from there until the watch only showed 1 picture being synced, which was the one from the album. I then changed the watch face back from dynamic to album and left the face on the watch.

I did this on Tuesday. Yesterday, on Wednesday my watch was at 37% after wearing it without additional charging for almost 17 hours. Usually it would have been dead after 14 hours max. Today I took the watch off the charger at 7:30, at 8:41 it jumped to 99% where it would have been at 94% or even less before and now at 12:30 it is still at 87% which is 2.6%/hour.

I think the constant photo sync would be a good explanation for this issue as the watch would constantly download new pictured from the phone and would index them. In addition to that it would also explain why not everyone is affected by this since this would not apply to people having their photo sync configured to sync specific albums rather than the watch syncing random photos when nothing is selected for the photo sync. And it would also explain why resetting the watch doesn't help to fix this issue since the watch would start randomly syncing photos again after the reset.

Might be worth to check/try for others.

Not a good idea…

I still get 2-3 days on my Ultra 1. I make Phone Calls… Text Messages… get tones of Notifications, Heart Beat notifications… watch YouTube videos… read Emails… listen to Music and more on a daily basis.

You should always update both the iPhone and Watch. Another update there are going to be those people who are going to have problems. Be it a battery that’s doesn’t have a good health… older Watch and those who don’t know how to use their Apple Watch correctly.

But if you want too don’t update and you’ll be stuck in the past. You have an older Watch! Soon your Watch 4 will be outdated and won’t get an update. What’s your battery health for the 4?

For a little while there I thought I was going insane. I bought a watch that I wouldn’t have to sit around and worry about whether it was charged or not all the time. Maybe I should just go back to a standard watch which you only have to win once a year or put it battery in every 6-8 months?

I mean, I like apple products a lot, but this is poop !! Can tell it’s a problem with almost 300 me too votes!

No. The point of the forum is to allow Apple users that like to help, give help to fellow users.

Apple’s involvement is very minimal. They maintain the forum software. Users can report posts to moderators to request editing out personal information. Users can report content that violates the terms of service everyone clicked “Agree”, but never read.

And if a question goes unanswered for too long, then an Apple forum moderator will post pointers to some maybe related Apple technical articles that may or may not be useful. They do not really interact with the user.

But the small forum team is over worked just keeping “The Wheels on the Bus” so to speak in maintaining the forum environment.

So no, Apple developers and Apple decision makers do not read these forums for feedback.

Apple does provide several ways to provide feedback.

Product Feedback - Apple

Or you could get a free Apple Developer Account, and file a bug report.

Indirectly, interactions with the Genius Bar employees, and Apple Support may result in those employees passing along issues they are seeing over and over again.

I encourage you to send your Apple Watch feedback to

FYI: I have never worked for Apple. I am just a fellow user that likes to try and help fellow Apple users. As are all the other volunteers answering questions in these forums.

Woke up at 6.3am with 100% battery on my Apple Watch, it’s now 7.45am and it’s 69% battery. In that time, I’ve done a moderate 30min walk and had breakfast. I did the iOS 10.3.1 update 2 days ago and since then my Apple Watch battery has been draining so fast, why???! This is my first Apple Watch (purchased in Sept 2023) and have encountered battery charge issues before/after every recent update, maybe I should have stayed with Fitbit!!!!! This is so frustrating, please sort it out Apple!!!
