Why did my iPhone backup suddenly become encrypted? My iPhone 14 is suddenly showing that the backup is encrypted. I back regularly. I never checked the box and never entered a password. I have tried every typical password that I have used on other things. Nothing works. I have called Apple Support twice. They did a screen share and looked for any such password, but did not find it. They say it cannot be fixed. They say I would have to wipe my phone and start all over. Anyway to find out this password? The other thing is how did this happen? Even if I HAD encrypted it, I would have used a very well known password. But for this very reason, I never encrypt backups. [Re-Titled by Moderator]

Password for iTunes encrypted backup I loaded iTunes and backed up my phone. I didn't get a prompt to set a password for the encrypted backup. I have now cleared my phone due to other issues and iTunes is now asking for a password to restore my iPhone to the backup. I've tried my iCloud and other pass codes to no avail. Any ideas how it would set a password for my backup without prompting and what I can do to access the backup?

See Disable iOS backup encryption - Apple Community. In particular:

If you have forgotten the password, or were not aware that encryption had been enabled, consider that it might be any computer, Apple ID, Wi-Fi password or device PIN that you've used in the past, working from the assumption that you might have reused a common password that you were using when encryption was first activated. See About encrypted backups on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support for details.
