Spotlight Works But Finder Search Does Not

Running under Ventura 13.6 with an external AFPS drive. Finder can browse it with no problem but as soon as I try using Search nothing shows up. I can open Spotlight and enter a filename located on that drive and Spotlight finds it.

So this must not be an indexing problem. I have also checked the box for "External Disks" in the Finder Sidebar settings. I have seen a number of posts about Spotlight failing to find files on external disks but none like this where Spotlight works but Finder's Search does not.

Hi and thanks. I don't have 'This Mac' showing in finder and don't see it in the sidebar settings. Probably something I did to intentionally hide it. But I did figure out the problem. I switched folders and was able to use both Finder/Search and perform a Raw Query (Spotlight) search. Doing 'Get Info' for both a working and a problem folder, I noticed that the problem folder's permissions were more limited. My userid had Read & Write permissions in both cases but the 'everyone' group had no access. The disk itself was set to give 'everyone' no access, the 'admin' read only and my userid Read & Write. So it was simply an inheritance problem and easily solved.

But examining info on a few other folders, I saw that the user group 'staff' had read permissions on some folders while that group did no even appear under 'Sharing & Permissions' for other folders. If I tried to add 'staff', it was not even available as a selection option. I don't know what the group 'staff' refers to or the best was to set up shares for only selected folders on the drive so I need to learn more about that. It is odd that while the volume is set as a 'Shared folder' the folders do not display as a 'Shared folder' but are available on the network.
