Final Cut Pro. Chromakeying unwanted vignette.

Hi! Since the last update on FCP I find in the green screen keyer that the light wrap intensity affects also to the frame of the full image, creating an unwanted vignette effect. I believe this to be a bug? At least I think it didn't happen before but in the matte tools soften levels (what is an inconvenience).

In this image example the left part of the image had a green mat. Combined with an video below we should change the background, however there are white borders on the keyed video because of the light wrap parameter. (This didn't happen in previous versions of FCP)

This also happens with matte tools soften levels:

I wish they could fix this, as I rather not to have to create another layer for masking those borders each time I wish to use those parameters (what is almost always). Previous workflow was pretty agile.

That white outline around your clip (not technically a vignette — more of a "bleed"), is just as much from the Matte Tools Softening as it is from Light Wrap (it happens when both are in use). You can get rid of it by scaling your clip to about 105% (depends on the level of softening), or don't use Light Wrap... or don't use Matte Tools Softening (or any other Matte Tool). You can have one or the other or scale.

I'd tried in other projects and happens the same. They are very standard FullHD 25 fps Rec 709, media was Apple ProRes 422 HQ but even with an image should happen, as long as the not keyed area touches the frame, obviously. Here you have one, if you want to try.

I know about the resize roundabout, but thanks. I'd rather not having to resize, specially when this is an issue that didn't happen before last update.

Sometimes I'm feeling we're going backwards with the updates.

That's the problem I'm having. I'm familiar with the problem, it happens with other effects I've made. For those, I built in the "trim edges" (scaling) feature to get around it. Unfortunately, I cannot make it happen with Keyer on my version of Final Cut (10.4.10) and that makes it very difficult to analyze for solutions.

If this is an update issue, by all means — send Apple feedback:

However, I would think that if the greenscreen you have going on in this image is something you have to deal with regularly, you need a better screen. Even lighting on the green would help immensely. The harder you have to "push" a keyer, the more likely you will develop problems.

I did try! I did all kinds of things to this. At no point did I get a "fade fringe" at the edges, so it may just be a version problem.

The built-in FCP keyer is OK for many cases. However there are much better third-party keyers that can handle difficult cases. These can save you lots of time. Hawaiki Keyer 5 is excellent. I've keyed poorly shot green screens with it that I couldn't handle with either FCP's keyer or Resolve's Delta Keyer. It's in the FxFactory app, just search for "keyer".

Yes, this is an update version issue and I have to send the feedback to apple. It didn't happen me with my previous versions so if you are still in 10.4 you are proving my point. This is an issue of 10.6s.

Can I ask you, why did't you update to the latest version of FCP? (I thought that having the application updated was advisable, but with all the problems I run into each new version I'm having second thought)

Why haven't I updated? Several reasons. Older equipment (2017 iMac i5). I was having problems with overheating - loud fan - throttled performance, etc., until I was able to clean out one of the vents (still not sure it's 100% recovered). Mostly because I have software that I won't be able to use anymore if I upgrade the OS. I use Motion for 3D modelling and the font making software I use was mothballed about 10 years ago.

Secondary reason: nothing in the updates since 10.4.10 have been anything I care for... I don't care about the object trackers — I don't have any problem with manual tracking. Don't care about "Cinematic Mode" (I'm not even sure what it is — I don't need or use LUTs or other nonsense like that — I have my own tools that handle it all exceptionally well). Don't really care about the Neon filter (Motion). These three things are about the only NEW things in Final Cut/Motion. I'm not a video editor, technically, I'm a template/plugin maker and it's not a bad thing to develop older version templates for newer versions Final Cut Pro. When I release "new" templates, they're already "backdated" by about 2 whole versions of Final Cut (10.4 templates for 10.6 FCP) — that's convenient for a lot of people!

I have other reasons which start venturing into the "too much" arena... so I'll leave it here.

Recommendation: Always wait for confirmation that any particular version is stable enough to do the work you need to get done. If the software was perfect, there would be no need for updates! (Except, someone always seems to think they need to fix what ain't broke.)
