External hard drives don't mount under sonoma

I have just upgraded to Sonoma on a 2023 Silicon Mac Mini and all my USB-A have stopped mounting or are not reliably mounting. These are encrypted APFS drives.

None were there at first; they don't show up in Disk Utility either so I can't mount them there.

I followed a hint here - https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/sonoma-wont-mount-external-drives.2404856/ - and tried recovery mode. In recovery mode they are greyed out but can be mounted using disk utility. But then on a normal reboot they disappear again, usually (as I speak I have a Time Machine drive that has remained visible on reboot but another is missing)

Extremely frustrated that such a fundamental bug is in this OS.

I had a similar issue [...] I was seeing a pop-up come show and disappear so fast that I had to screen-record and slow it down to see what it was. [...]

Hope this helps.

Nice tip!

Was also sometimes seeing the same disappearing dialog when connecting external drives. My "workaround" was both suboptimal and embarrassing (reconnect device with cursor positioned just so for a split-second click).

Hopefully ppl will see and follow your recommendation.

Mmmm....interesting. I tried making that change to privacy & security but doesn't seem to help. Still able to mount using the disk utility etc as before but accessory message doesn't seem to appear in that process. Also, using the disk utility will prompt for the password and mount the disk but I get the error message during that process:

Could not mount “AppleAPFSMedia”. (com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error 49229.)

I still think some thing is not right in the external, encrypted, disk mount process.

As a Professional Photographer who works solely off of SSDs and HDs, this is extremely frustrating. It's LITERALLY costing me money. SOMETIMES my SSD will show up, but most likely, it will not.

My background and screensaver also will not stay. Every time I restart my MacBook my display settings revert to the standard which is super annoying but not a big deal in comparison to abruptly halting my entire business.

This $2,300 MacBook is ABSOLUTELY useless to me and my business now, and I am highly displeased.

I wasn’t aware if this flaw and just updated to Sonoma and even installed Sonoma updates the next day and still NO disk utility. External exfat drive does not show up and cannot be accessed. $4,000 MacBook pro bought 2 years sgo. This is UNACCEPTABLE!!!

all my music programs on my MacBook, but can’t access any of my projects now!!!!

this post I’m replying to is from September? It’s December 15th and unaware users are still having to find this out after updating?

exter still works with my old Dell Pc desktop from 1995 with no issues, but won’t liad on 2021 MacBook pro after updating OS? SERIOUSLY?

I tried after disk repair on windows and still won’t show up in finder on my Macbook Pro abd disk utility won’t load. I couldn’t back up beforehand because none of my 6 externals would work with Time Machine.

is there any help out there? Is Apple fixing this situation if I bring in to an Apple store?HELP???

Me too. I have so many of my files stored on an external harddrive which has ALWAYS been a read & write with my mac. Since upgrading to the newest OS I can no longer write to my hard drive. I am beyond frustrated. Even though my permissions are "read and write" in the sharing and permissions it is still read only. Apple, please fix this. It used to work seamlessly so why did you break it?

I've had nothing but mounting issues with my Lacie External HDDs. This problem is mind numbing as well as what Apple is turning into. Cmon man, this company used to innovate, now it just aggravates. Fix these issues. I had to wipe out two hard drives because of this. This is UNACCEPTABLE. You got us paying all this money for these devices that sometimes work. iMusic is another BS example. Syncing and mounting isses with phones too. Macs are slowly becoming not worth it.

I have MacBook Pro (intel) with os 14.3.1 and it has no issues with external drives, but then my iMac 24” (silicon) which is newer and running the same os has issues with some external drives not being seen. So the os works ok on some machines but not others. So it looks like the Apple silicon computers don’t like Sonoma. Looks like I will roll back to Ventura for now. What a mess. Why is Apple always mum about serious issues?

my macbook pro on sonoma does not show that option in the settings lol what a waste of money these macs are. They just dont want to live in harmony with other ecosystems. Pathetic!

P.S. My garmin watch connects with its software on my mac but does not pop up the drive folder when the watch is connected. This has made the after market maps installations impossible.

The same happened with me (iMac 2021). Right after upgrading to Sonoma (14.3.1) all external drives (except Samsung SSD) stopped being recognized by iMac completely. No sign showing that the drive is plugged in, as if nothing has happened. I've tried this with six different external hard drives - it's all the same, they are not recognized. They ARE recognized and work on any ordinary PC with Windows. Now I have to buy six new Samsung SSD of 2TB and 4 TB. I feel robbed by Apple heavily and it is VERY disappointing.

Hello. I have a problem mounting thumb drives from an external port that has 10 ports, 8 of them the older USB and two of them are Thunderbolt. My phone can be read from the Thunderbolt ports, but nothing reads from the USB ports (although they are great for charging). I have Sonoma 14.4.1, and the System Prefs have been changed to System Settings, and under Privacy & Security> Allow Accessories, there is no longer Allow Accessories. Have you upgraded your OS and had to deal with the lack of Allow Accessories, and if so, what did you do?
