Disable Caps Lock Indicator on macOS Sonoma

A feature has been added to macOS Sonoma - the onscreen caps lock indicator.

While i am sure this may be useful for some, for me it is not, is there any way to disable it?

OK maryo10 and others asking, here goes. There is nothing magic about using Terminal for Apple if you follow the steps verbatim and copy and paste the Command exactly as printed from a trusted source

First you have to be logged on your computer as the Administrator. In other words you need to be logged on and able to make changes by entering your username/admin password.

Here is how to access the Terminal app

Go to Applications/Utilities/Terminal App. Open The Terminal App

Once open Click Return/Enter (you should see your computer name and your user name) Now you are ready to enter the command

Copy and Paste (do not try to write it) the command that yochess posted. Disable Caps Lock Indicator on macOS Sono… - Apple Community The post is the third post I believe.

I will reprint it here but all credit goes to yochees This command has worked perfectly for me. MacBookPro running Sonoma

Make sure you copy and paste exactly as written. No spaces and no deletions.

With Terminal app open and your username showing copy the first line of the command and paste to the Terminal app.

Click Return/Enter and it will ask for your admin password. Enter password and click Return/Enter

First line of command

sudo mkdir -p /Library/Preferences/FeatureFlags/Domain

Now copy the last two lines of the command and paste to the Terminal app.

Click Return/Enter.

Last two lines of command

sudo /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Add 'redesigned_text_cursor:Enabled' bool false" /Library/Preferences/FeatureFlags/Domain/UIKit.plist

Now restart your computer. All done.

Hope this helps.

OK, seriously. Are you just trolling.

You think I'm trolling because I like something you dislike? Did I suggest you were trolling because you complained about the feature? No, I recognize that it's possible for people to have different preferences than me and still be rational, civil adults.

Of course, if you want to talk trolling, we could discuss your username.... ;-)

OK, I'm feeling stupider by the minute. I clicked on "reply" to reply to yochees' post and post a thank you. I don't understand why I wouldn't be able to mark yochees' answer as helpful.

As I noted, you can only use the "Helpful" button twice in a thread. So, either you have already done so and have forgotten or there is a glitch in the forum (definitely possible). But, if you reply and thank someone directly, then they know it's from you. If you just click on "Helpful", they may never even notice.

Just to set the record straight:

Yochees' answer is the first one after the OP, shown as "best answer". It has a link "view in context" that I clicked. In that view, the "helpful" button for is grayed out and unresponsive. When I hover over the "helpful" button on ANY other post, including your latest, the button highlights, indicating I can click it. I haven't marked any other posts as helpful. When I scroll through all of the posts on this thread and find yochees' on page 4, the button is also grayed out and unresponsive.

Great, there appears to be a solution. Can someone explain how to do this to a lay person who is not technologically adept. How does the unsavvy internet user do this?

The solution doesn't have anything to do with the internet. Basically, you're copying and pasting the text given in the "Apple recommend" answer into the Terminal and then rebooting your computer. There's nothing particular difficult about it. However, it is also not particularly difficult to mess things up rather badly if you do something wrong in Terminal. I generally recommend that people who aren't comfortable with Terminal don't go messing about. But, it's up to you. I imagine most people learn to work in Terminal by playing around.

Thank you! Really appreciate the "hand-holding" step-by-step instructions as it worked for me, too!

I did notice though that per your instructions, after I pasted the first text group and hit "Return" it asked for my password then, at that point, not after pasting the second Text Group as referred on the instructions.

I attempted a few times as I was nervous but went through with typing my password in after pasting the first Text Group and hitting enter. Then pasted the Second Test Group after that and then quit and restarted.

Many thanks my friend! ~W

I only get the text cursor issue when the flag for disabling the Caps Lock and the Input Source switcher is set. If I set the flag back to Enabled = YES, then I don't have any text cursor issues. Not all apps seemed to be affected by it, but I'm getting a growing list that are. So far the pop ups are more annoying, but I'm hoping to find a way to have the best of both worlds. :)

Hi yochees,

Thank you for posting this, that was very kind.

The problem type of fix is that this can potentially lead to future problems. Should Apple create their own fix for this, say a setting/toggle in the keyboard settings, they couldn't account for a user-initiated setting modification.

It likely won't be an issue, but people should keep it in mind.

I would suggest that re-running this and setting the boolean value to true could reverse this, but an Apple fix may completely change how the functionality is saved as a setting.

Thanks for a temporary fix though. Hopefully Apple fixes this.
