macOS sonoma can’t access full disk access

Just upgraded iMac to macOS Sonoma. Installation went fine but when apps that require full disk access try to get it, no apps appearing in full access list and + option to add apps with full disk access doesn’t work. This means that apps such as Clean my Mac and Intego security not fully functional .

Any help gratefully received!

Part 1 of 3

Any Third Party Applications that will interfere with the normal operation of the OS,  is an invitation for disaster.

Certain Applications maybe available on the Apple Apps Store - this only means the Developer is prepared to pay Apple a portion on each sale.

What the Application may do to the computer is up to the User to check this out before purchase

Any of the below should be removed as per Developers Instructions

Disk Cleaner

This will include CleanMyMac , aka “ BrickMyMac

Part 2 of 3

Third Party Security Software

Intego AntiVirus

Specific to CleanMyMac aka “ BrickMyMac “

To put the CleanMyMac is context and the damages it may have or has already done.

This application can or will Muck Up your User Account ( Home Folder ) of this machine.

It does not touch the Operating System itself unless you consider your User Account ( Home Folder ) as part of the Operating System

Then in that specific context - it has Mucked Up the Operating  System

I'd advice NOT to use apps like CleanMyMac and Intego security.

...

Remove all 3rd party virus apps (Avast, AVG, Bitdefender, Intego, MacAfee, Norton, ESET NOD32, Trusteer etc) and 3rd party "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up" apps (CleanMyMac, MacKeeper etc). They produce only obscure errors and money loss.

Don't use VPN services. Unless you're using it to tunnel into a secure private network such as your employer or school, it's doing absolutely nothing to protect your privacy or secure your data traffic. Exactly the opposite, in fact.

The cure is worse than the imaginary disease. The "cleaners" produce obscure errors. And then the users ask why their Mac misbehaves.

"Don't take my word for it but by all means search the forum for information about CleanMyMac. It is meretricuous junk that is known to cause issues with Mac installations, OS installations and individual applications. Dump it."

Yes, usually some very tiny bits of preference files might be left when an app is trashed without an uninstaller. And even with an uninstaller often some remnants are left. But they are inactive and do not consume any meaningful disk space.

Hello Matti,

I am a novice when it comes to this stuff, so heres my questions:

Why do you say to not use VPNs, Anti-Virus or CleanMyMac, I've used CleanMyMac for along time?

If you don't use cleaners for your Mac, how do you make sure that your Mac stays fast and doesn't get cluttered and slow down?

So how do you make sure that an app is completed uninstalled from the system?

The only thing I know for sure is that it does seem to fully uninstall apps. When I've just dragged an app to the trash, that doesn't seem fully get rid of everything on my Mac. I seem to have alot of left overs. I'm no expert.

Just curious I'd love to know.

Thank you for this question. I have the same problem, in my case with a program for qualitative analysis which I use for my work. Despite the fact that it has allowed to access full disk, the system continues asking me to give access. What can I do about it?

Without knowing the app it is hard to say. If the developer of the app is not part of the Apple Developer's program, then macOS by default will refuse to run it by default since the app is not from a recognized developer (aka, part of the Apple Developer program). If you are encountering this message, then It is still possible to run the app assuming it is compatible with the OS by right-clicking or Control-clicking on the app and selecting "Open" since this will trigger macOS to provide a pop-up message alerting you that the app is from an unrecognized developer and give you the option to abort, or to accept the risks and allow the app to be granted an exception so you can run it normally in the future. This is the only reliable method running a third party app from an unrecongized developer for the first time since the button to make the exception does not always appear in the Security & Privacy System Preferences/Settings. Even using the Right-click or Control-click method will sometimes result in failure to get the "Allow" button, but usually trying a second time will get you the pop-up prompt to "Allow" the app to run.

It is the responsibility of the third party app developer to make sure their app is compatible with new major versions of macOS (or even minor update patches). Sometimes it may take a developer weeks, or months, or even a year before they make their app fully compatible with a new major version of the OS. It is the responsibility of the owner of the computer to make sure all their third party software and hardware is compatible with the new OS before upgrading their computer to the new OS.

If this does not help, then you really should open your own thread about the issue making so that contributors can focus exclusively on your own unique issues & system since it is impossible to provide proper assistance in someone else's thread. Keep in mind while you may seem to have a similar issue, it could be caused by something completely different than the OP's issue. Your Mac's configuration will be different than everyone else's configuration....those differences are important. We need detailed information in order to properly assist a specific case. Sometimes general tips are not enough.....general tips are all you will find when asking for assistance in someone else's thread since it gets too difficult & confusing when assisting more than one person per thread. Many good contributors will completely ignore such threads for this very reason. Remember we are just other regular users such as yourself who are volunteering our own personal time to assist people.

When starting your own new thread, be sure to include the exact model of your Mac and version of macOS being used. Also include the name of the app & its current version (even provide a link to the developer's website so we know exactly what app you are using). It would also be a good idea to run the third party app EtreCheck and post the report so we can examine it for clues. It would also help to know if you were using the problem app before upgrading to Somoma (if so, what was the previous version of macOS used?). You may also want to try booting into Safe Mode to see if that makes any difference.

Keep in mind any third party apps which try to install drivers (aka extensions) may have problems when used on a new major version of macOS since Apple keeps changing the underlying macOS framework to minimize the impact of drivers causing problems with macOS since they are tied so closely to the bowels of macOS where the smallest hiccup can bring the OS to its knees in a system crash. The third party app developers must keep changing their apps to make them run in newer versions of macOS as the security & privacy enhancements change. You should always contact the app developer for assistance with their software. There is only so much the community can do to assist in remotely troubleshooting a problem especially if it is an obscure app.

You may also want to review this excellent article written by a respected forum contributor. It is written so it really applies to every OS and device. I don't even recommend anyone running any third party anti-virus software or cleaning apps on Windows systems either for the same reasons. Even Windows' built-in anti-virus is sufficient these days especially since the formerly respected third party anti-virus alternatives have become nothing but dangerous unreliable junk where the developers are selling people's personal information or injecting ads & pop-ups into the software or OS.

All great questions. Part of starts by not installing junk as respected contributor @John Galt likes to say. It also helps to be picky about the third party apps you do install since quality differs between developers. Any app which runs an installer is one you should be very careful with since those apps will install bits & pieces all throughout the OS....these are the apps which are most likely to cause macOS instability as well. This is not to say all these apps are bad or to be avoided, only to minimize randomly installing & testing apps with these installers since these are the apps which may leave pieces behind that could interfere with macOS.

Don't trust app reviews since many of them may have been manipulated even if they have a million reviews or 5-star ratings. Plus apps with a previously good & respected track record could later become absolute pieces of junk later on especially if the app was acquired by a new owner. Sometimes an app review may show such a change, but not necessarily if you are the first one to get the new junk version. Always be on your guard when installing any third party apps. It is really hard to find good apps these days since the focus is no longer on following developers like it used to be.

If you want to test out new apps, then I highly recommend you install macOS into another APFS volume beside your main OS, or to install macOS to an external drive, or install macOS into a Virtual Machine so you can evaluate any new apps into an OS that can be easily removed when testing is over (or keep it for future app testing). This way you don't mess up your main OS boot volume which you rely on day to day. This is what I do when I need a new app. I also make sure to only install the bare minimum third party apps to do what I need to do (especially ones which utilize an installer). When uninstalling a third party app, make sure to consult the developer's documentation on how to uninstall their app. Usually they bundle their installer into the application or hide it within the application bundle, while other times they may have a special uninstaller to be downloaded from the app developer's website. Sometimes a developer may provide step by step instructions to manually remove various portions of their apps. Usually as long as the app doesn't leave any files behind in the system area, any remaining .plist files can usually be safely ignored since they usually won't interfere and are small in size.
