how add music iPod shuffle

I'm having difficulty adding music to iPod shuffle; now inadvertently have deleted all music stored to iPod and had no backup. Have been trying to add music but iPod only shows up in finder (is plugged into my Mac via adapter.) It is my understanding that my iPod shuffle should automatically populate in options to download music in Apple/etc.

Hi Legallyblindneedmyipodshuffle,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities to get help with your iPod shuffle. If it doesn't show up in the Music app on your Mac, but it does appear in Finder, you may need to trust it. Follow the steps below, taken from the how-to sync resource Connect your device to your Mac to sync Music content - Apple Support

1. Connect your device to your Mac using a USB or USB-C cable.
2. Do one of the following:
If it’s your first time connecting this device to your Mac: Open the Finder  on your Mac, click the device in the Finder sidebar, then click Trust; you may also need to tap Trust on the device.
If it’s not your first time connecting this device to your Mac: In the Music app  on your Mac, click the device in the sidebar, then click Sync Settings in the top-right corner.
The device opens in the Finder  on your Mac.

Once you've done that, you can set up sync settings, and follow the steps to sync in the Apple Support article Sync content between your Mac and iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support.

Don't hesitate to respond back if you need some additional assistance.

Best!
