Clicking wallpaper does not reveal desktop on macOS Sonoma

I have a MacStudio 2022 M1 Max chip that I upgraded to Sonoma 14.0.

When I try to reveal the desktop wallpaper by clicking the wallpaper, the desktop is not displayed. Nothing happens. I also cannot right-mouse-click on the desktop wallpaper even when the desktop is revealed by either method below.

I can reveal desktop wallpaper with ⌘-F3 or by right-mouse clicking on a widget and selecting edit.

I have tried quitting all of the apps (including menu item apps) that will might interfere with the desktop and have updated all of the apps that I am running.

My desktop settings are set as below.

Can anyone suggest what I should try? The same functionality is working fine on my wife's MacBook Air.

Thanks.

Try this:

MacBook Pro (M1)

defaults write com.apple.finder "CreateDesktop" -bool "true" && killall Finder

The issue with revealing the desktop wallpaper on your Mac Studio M1 Max running macOS Sonoma 14.0 might be due to specific settings or conflicts. Try the following steps:

  1. Check Settings: Go to System Settings > Desktop & Stage Manager and ensure "Click wallpaper to reveal desktop" is set to Always. If you enjoy editing and managing your photos, consider exploring tools like VSCO iOS for additional photo editing options.
  2. Restart Stage Manager: Toggle Stage Manager off and on again.
  3. Safe Mode: Boot into Safe Mode (restart while holding Shift) to see if the issue persists. If not, a third-party app might be the cause.
  4. New User: Create a new user account in System Settings > Users & Groups to check if the problem is user-specific.
  5. Software Update: Ensure macOS and all apps are up to date via System Settings > Software Update.

If these steps don't work, contacting Apple Support might be necessary.
