How to adjust wallpaper resolution on my MacBook running Sonoma?

Just upgraded to Sonoma on my 2023 Macbook and am trying to use the wallpapers. Some of the Landscape wallpapers do not fit my screen properly. It seems to be too high of a resolution as I am only able to see a portion of the picture. There doesn't seem to be any controls to fit the picture to the screen. I am trying to use the Scotland ones. I also did a bit of digging and found that those wallpapers are .mov files rather than a picture file like jpg or png. Can you even change the resolution of .mov files?

I have a brand new Macbook Pro with Sonoma 14.2.1, ie all the latest updates and have the exact same issue. Why did you remove the "fit to screen", etc options that I have read about in all prior versions? Its quite ridiculous that the images you supply in the Wallpaper screen zoom into a single corner of the image by default and have zero options for correcting.

Why is it that old features that work and users like, are removed when you make updates? stop the insanity and restore the functions users want and soon. this thread goes back to last fall and you've not corrected something that was a functioning feature in prior OS. Why? I don't want to know. I really want you to fix it.

I also just upgraded to Sonoma, and all the supplied static Apple wallpaper images are totally zoomed in to maybe 1/4 of the image. I can't find any way to fix it. So not just the moving, but the static. And in fact the Sonoma native wallpaper was SO bright and SO intense, I thought if I changed to something more neutral it would help. But no. The agave plant is so big I can practically see aphids crawling up the leaves ;-(

I am using Apple Studio Display (which is a 5K monitor), Sonoma wallpapers are blurry except one "Sonoma Horizon" which was the default wallpaper when I installed Sonoma for the first time. All the other wallpapers are either seem to be cropped or not crystal clear. I guess it might be fixed in future updates

Thank you xaru_fushigi for confirming the problem. Apple has been really promoting these new "motion" wallpapers/screen savers. It's unfortunate that they have been implemented improperly as it is a nice touch in the aesthetics department. There are a A LOT of these new wallpapers/screensavers included with Sonoma, but as I said, they are simply unusable - not sure how this could have gotten into the final release. Again, thanks for confirming.

These wallpapers are actually Apple's screensavers / aerial movies taken from Apple TV. They can be downloaded in 4K as the maximum resolution and therefore look blurred on a 5K screen. This is most likely not a software issue. There is probably just no 5K material (yet).

I guess the rationale behind this was, that remastering the existing material was too expensive at this point, as only a fraction of users may notice the issue and actually care. The 5K downloads would also cause a lot more traffic and take significantly more storage space on each device.

But I still hope that there will be upgraded wallpapers in future versions of macOS...

There are also still images to use as wallpapers and there should be Scotland in a still image. The ones that move or movies are Aerial screensavers. I don’t believe you can change the resolution in settings, you have to find a way to do this yourself in a photo editor and use as a photo wallpaper. For photos, not .mov files. They should be stored in the Mac system folders in perhaps System/Library/Desktop Pictures?

I don’t know if it should keep running if you’re manually selecting to Lock Screen. That’s a security feature to turn off the display. If you want it to run longer and impatiently waiting for it to start you can set it to start in 1, 2, 3, 5, 10 minutes (or more) and extend the time the display turns off so it will run longer. Choose longer duration if on power adapter to conserve battery.
