Updated MacBook Pro to macOS Sonoma, now battery drains quickly

I updated my MacBook Pro this morning to macOS Sonoma. Everything was good at first and I really like the look and feel. But as soon as I took it off my charger to go to some meetings the battery dropped from 74% to 44% in about 5 minutes. Then as soon as I turned on WebEx the battery dropped from 44% to 7%.

Anyone else having battery drain issues with macOS Sonoma? Is it maybe just temporary from all the background activity similar to the phones?

One significant contributor to MacBook battery drain after updating to Sonoma or any other new OS is the background setup processes. These background activities like Spotlight reindexing, Photos synchronization, Time Machine backup operations, emails, messages and other app updates. When your MacBook is working on these tasks, it puts an additional burden on both the CPU and GPU, leading to increased power usage and battery drainage. Generally this battery drain is temporary. The best thing to do is to monitor your battery situation and, if active, connect your Mac to a power adapter, allowing them to complete without interruption. This shouldn’t last longer than a couple of days at most.

Macbook Pro Maximum Capacity decreased from 99% to 98% in a week. I have no new software on my Mac except Sonoma :)
Looks battery goin' to die so fast.

The Battery's Maximum Capacity percentage change has nothing to do with Sonoma except for the calculation of the percentage value since the percentage is being calculated from raw information/values provided by the battery itself. The Apple batteries have their Full Charge Capacity (FCC) fluctuating up & down in minor increments even with a good healthy battery. These minor fluctuations of the battery's FCC can result in a several percentage change shown & reported by macOS as the Battery Capacity percentage. Keep in mind, this Battery Capacity percentage was only introduced to the average user with the release of macOS 13.x Ventura, so most people have no idea how this percentage value really behaves on a Mac. I am probably one of the few people who have really performed detailed observations of the Apple batteries because I am responsible for supporting thousands of my organization's Apple laptops.

As for the battery charge levels dropping, see my previous post regarding the most likely culprits. On a co-worker's personal Apple Silicon Mac where the battery charge dropped to 0%, I discovered that iCloud was syncing pictures overnight (this was an Apple Silicon Mac running Ventura...not Sonoma). It wasn't easy to discover.

As I previously mentioned in my reply, I've already downgraded to mac os ventura. The reason we initiated this thread was to address this issue, which seems to be a software-related problem. Reverting to a previous OS version is a complex process that involves creating a bootable drive for macOS Ventura, backing up the system, formatting the Mac, reinstalling the old macOS from the bootable drive, and then restoring files from the backup.

During this process, there are still a few challenges to contend with. For instance, Rosetta may not work properly and requires manual update. Additionally, there may be compatibility issues with cloud drive services on macOS since they are optimized for the latest version, macOS Sonoma.

I encountered the same issue, and subsequently, I downgraded to macOS Ventura. If you require assistance with the downgrade process, I can certainly help you with that. However, it's essential that this issue be addressed by Apple's software department. To achieve that, we need to raise awareness about the problem first. I attempted to contact Mac Rumors in an effort to have them publish an article on this issue, but unfortunately, I haven't received a response yet.

Sorry for mentioning Sonoma in context with an iPad.

Same time Sonoma was released, iOS and iPadOS were updated to version 17.

I see this battery drain issue in connection with this updates, i.e. Sonoma, iOS 17 and iPadOS 17.

Please compare the value of

last_value_MaximumCapacityPercent

in analytics files, before and after the update to Sonoma, iOS 17 or iPadOS 17.

On some devices I saw a huge drop, while other devices were not affected.

After the situation seems to be being ignored by Apple, I tried the reinstal sonoma 'fix' it appears to have worked for me but only been able to check after 12 hours.

This situation is totally unacceptable, the number of people who have had major battery drain and overheating cannot be ignored by Apple. They may not like the fact that there is an issue but to do nothing to reassure customers is deplorable.

If nothing else Apple, think of your reputation.

Not a happy customer.

Your issue might be that you unplugged your power coord AFTER you closed your laptop.

There is this thing that your machine will take its time while its charging (since power is abundant to the system) to run tons of heavy background tasks, but funnily enough (and this is a thing that ****** me off a little bit) the laptop won't stop working when you unplug it, because the process that checks wether or not it should stop will wake up only if you open your laptop, causing your computer to drain battery.

Tho if you say "losing only 1% overnight with everything unplugged, power coord too" then I don't see your problem ... ?

My 2020 M1 can runt on power until it hits about 20%, then it dies straight. No low power warning.

Your screenshot is showing the Battery is either worn out or failing due to diminished capacity (see the topmost section with the yellow warning/alert triangle). Have Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider examine the laptop to provide you with a repair estimate to replace the Battery.

You definitely have a bad battery causing your problems.

I had battery drain issues for like 6 weeks after installing 14.1.1, but since I installed MacOS 14.1.2 the battery-draining-while-closed issue seems to have gone away. I might want more time to say definitively that it solved the problem, but over the course of a few days my battery drain seems much better. (late 2019 MBP)

Hi! I was just as mad as you are, I know the feeling. The steps I took: I googled “how to restore MacBook Pro 16” Touch-Bar to factory settings” and followed the instructions in one of the posts. I can’t remember exactly the process, as I am not a tech person. But I found it easy following one of the descriptions. It was something like restart, hold a key pressed (don’t remember which one, maybe R?), enter in recovery mode, delete all settings and content (this after I saved all my content on a different machine), then install Sonoma on this machine, from the same recovery mode. It took about two hours. Now everything goes smooth and the battery is back to the performance I was used to. Hope this helps.
