Microphone/ Audio Skipping and Distortion

While trying to record voice messages through imessage the microphone on my iphone makes this skipping sound, then barely picks up my voice. I assumed it was an issue with the microphone so I tested out the microphone in video and voice memos and the audio sounds clear, the only time I have trouble with it is when I'm trying to record voice messages through imessage. I can record voice messages with headphones connected using the mic on the headset, but once I disconnect and try to use the mic built into the phone it doesn't work for imessage but works everywhere else. Is this happening to anyone else too? Is there anyway I can fix it or do I just need a new phone? ;(
