Apple gift card refund

I ordered an apple product online with Apple gift card and paid the balance with a credit card. I wasn’t happy with my purchase so I returned the item but I want all the refund to be processed to my credit card and not my gift card, I told them at the store and they confirmed this is poss But when I checks online and also message the support team, they said the refund will be process to my gift card and bank account..and the invoice given to state refund is being processed to the original tender. Can I someone please explain what this means to me
