Open app > Play > Versus Computer …then the app closes but, if I am playing an opponent I have no problem.

You would want to be sure your software is up-to-date. For iPhone, before updating, we recommend backing up your iPhone first. These articles can be of help. When you back up, you can back up using a Mac or PC rather than iCloud if you choose.

If the issue continues, you can remove and reinstall the app. You can do this by following the steps in the previous article that you linked: If an app on your iPhone or iPad stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open - Apple Support
