Air pod pro connecting issue

My Air Pod Pros automatically connect to my iPad despite having set my iPhone to “connect when last connected.”

No matter what I do other than disabling Bluetooth on the iPad, the Air Pods disconnect from my phone and connect to the iPad.

Hello Pt141to,

This page will help provide some steps on disabling the auto-switching of the AirPods to the iPad: Switch your AirPods to another device - Apple Support

Turn off automatic switching

If you don't want your AirPods to switch automatically, you can turn off automatic switching on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV.

On your iPhone or iPad
1. With your AirPods in your ears and connected to your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth. Alternatively, you can go to Settings > [your AirPods].
2. Tap the More Info button  next to your AirPods in the list of devices.
3. Tap Connect to This iPhone [or iPad].
4. Tap When Last Connected to This iPhone [or iPad].
5. To turn on this feature again, tap Automatically.

On devices you'd like to have the AirPods automatically connect to, the above steps will help to find the setting. Then, tap on the "Automatically" option.

Cheers.
