i purchased a new 21.5 iMac in April 2021, but received an iMac from 2019
i didn't realize until i notice my catalina is outdated, why would apple charge me over $2000 in 2021 and send me a computer from 2019 ??
Yes, the 2019, 21.5” iMac was sold from March 2019 to April 2021. There were no newer versions of the 21.5” manufactured.

There was no 2021 21.5" iMac. What you bought in 2021 was the 2019 21.5" iMac model. Which was made until April 2021.
Feel free to upgrade it to Sonoma if you like.

The closest thing to a newer version of the iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, 2019) is the iMac (24-inch, M1, 2021). It came out in May 2021, and itself is now due for an update.
