Safari PiP laggy

Since Sonoma videos running in Picture in Picture mode are laggy.

It does not matter if the videos are playing on YouTube, Vimeo or something else. Even the quality is not important. All videos are laggy, though the audio is working fine.

As soon as I close PiP and the video is running in Safari as usual, everything is working fine.

This was working on Ventura without any problems.

Anyone has the same problem and found a workaround?

Same here. Furthermore, I have two external displays and it only happens if I move the PiP to the display where original is NOT located and when I move it back to the same display where the original is, there's no more lag.

I have just tried this, as I rarely use PIP.

To be clear, this is not the same as youtube's "miniplayer", it is the functionality built into macOS that lets on put a video playing back in a smaller floating window.

My experience is similar to yours. The only situation that causes a problem is when the PIP window is moved to a display that is different from where its original window is.

Moving the PIP or the original window so that the two are on the same display eliminates the lag.

I am running two 4k displays in high dpi mode on my MacBook Pro (m1max) in clamshell mode.

Typically the pip window is on the same display as safari and it is always laggy since Sonoma.

Funnily, moving it to my secondary screen sometimes reduces the lag. Moving it back on the main display, it's back again.

When pip is open and I play another YouTube video, then both are laggy.

I am talking about the macOS pip feature and no the YouTube mini player :-)

I just noticed, that all animations in Safari on every webpage are lagging, when the pip is active.

For example a js gallery rotating some pics are laggy, when the pip is on the same screen.

When moving the pip on my secondary display, the animation becomes smooth.

The same is true for the pip window. When it's moved to the secondary screen, it's smooth.

It's not working, when the safari window is moved to the secondary screen ...
