The trackpad is too sensitive

I've just got a refurbished MacBook Air running Ventura 13.3. The trackpad is way more sensitive than my old Mac and the slightest touch selects and highlights data on the screen. I've set the trackpad for a firm click but it makes no difference. Is there anything that can be done to remedy this?

Since my level of understanding of how this thing works is close to zero, technical info is not helpful to me. However, I can copy and paste responses to my coder son, who will (I hope) help me out.
