iPhone 15 Pro Max Terrible Battery

Is anyone else having absolutely awful battery life on their new iPhone 15 pro max? I drop roughly 10-12% on a 20 minute phone call and it heats up quite a bit. Wondering if this is a software thing or if it’s just how it’s going to be? I’m debating returning it if it’s going to be this bad for the whole life of the phone.

New phone. New iOS. May still be indexing. May be rogue apps that need an update. May need to double check settings. May need to check which apps are using the most battery and if a lot of that usage is background (if it isn’t necessary turn background activity off for any of those apps). This is often normal when a new iPhone and new iOS releases. If it is iOS related Apple will release an update when it is available to address the issue. Returning is a personal choice so you have to decide if you can be patient and allow the normal activities to occur or if you think it’s too risky and you want to return your device and go back to your old one. It’s unrealistic to think it will be that bad for the life of the phone unless you have your settings in a way that you would use a lot more battery. Decide what makes you more comfortable. Hopefully you still have your old device if you opt to return.

But no, I am not having absolutely horrible battery life or anything that causes alarm. I upgrade almost every year and at this point know what the norms are in the beginning (even when I don’t upgrade and just install the new iOS on the device I already had). Plus..on calls…it also depends on the signal from the carrier and if it’s fluctuating or switching between 5G and LTE (and 5G Ultra). That may be contributing to heavier battery use.

Based on my experience with a new iPhone 15 Pro Max, (I have great battery life and no heat problems) you have a few possible causes and options. Relatively few users are reporting problems (probably any hundreds of thousands shipped, maybe a few thousand reporting problems) so the issues are most likely to be software and app compatibility. Hardware manufacturing defect is unlikely, it would impact at least whole batches and we are not seeing that in reports here.

Make sure you are fully updated on iOS, and keep any App Store extras fully updated.

If you suspect a specific app might be causing problems, try updating or uninstalling it to test the guess. (There have been several suspects named on the fan sites).

Being practical about it, Apple is reported to have identified some potential bugs which will be resolved in a software patch. That is about par for the course with a new product and new software. A few people reported problems and the internet has inflated it into a massive issue which should have the new product recalled and scrapped.

The reality is rather different - you clearly wanted the new iPhone and if you return it you will nee faced with a long backorder for a replacement. My advice is to keep it and give Apple a reasonable chance to fix any issues in a software release. It will be under warranty for at least 12 months, so in the unlikely event you have a hardware defect you have plenty of time to arrange a swap-out. My best guess is you will still have the same device in 12 months and it will be working perfectly.
