Typing suggestions in floating bar gone in iPadOS 17?

Up until iPadOS 16, when using the iPad with a physical keyboard connected to it, we got typing suggestions in the form of three words in as many buttons.

While those remain in the on-screen keyboard, they now appear to be gone in iPadOS 17.

The floating bar when you type in any text field is still there, but it only shows:

  1. A button for keyboard language
  2. contextual buttons for the app one is using
  3. Microphone button to start dictation

Is there a way to bring it back? It was one of the most helpful features to me, since I often write e-mails and documents in at least 2 languages in which I am not a native speaker.

Thank you

iPad Pro, iPadOS 17

Hey NotationMaster,

Since it's not working as expected, let's see if some simple steps resolves this for you.

  1. Disconnect the external keyboard.
  2. Go to > General > Keyboard, then turn off Predictive
  3. Restart your iPad.

Once it's back to the Home Screen, turn Predictive back on and test the issue.

If it's still not working, please reach out to Apple Support. They're in the best position to look into this with you further: Get Support

All the best.

Hi NotationMaster,

It seems like you want predictive text suggestions to appear, is that right? If so, please check out this link, which has some information that may be helpful: Use predictive text on iPad

Use predictive text

With predictive text, you can write and complete entire sentences with just a few taps.

iPhone screen showing predictive text as you type a word in Messages.

As you type, you can see choices for words and phrases you'd probably type next, based on your past conversations, writing style, and even websites you visit in Safari.

To turn predictive text off or on:
1. Touch and hold the smile emoji  or the globe icon globe icon.
2. Tap Keyboard Settings, then turn Predictive on or off.
Or go to Settings > General > Keyboard, and turn Predictive on or off.

See a full list of languages that support predictive text.

Thanks!

I'm sorry, but this is not answering my question, where I plainly state that the on-screen keyboard shows Predictive Text as expected.

Upon connecting an external keyboard (in my case the Magic Keyboard case with trackpad included), the floating bar doesn't show Predictive Text as it used to in iPadOS 16. Instead, a per-app-custom floating bar appear with two fixed buttons (language and dictation) and from zero to many buttons in the middle. No sign of the Predictive Text segmented control / button array.

I will and contact Support if this doesn't work.

Could you confirm that, on your iPad running iPadOS 17, with a physical keyboard connected, the predictive text is still there?

I am just trying to rule out if this is an "as intended" feature of iPadOS (such as the CAPS Lock triggering the last Cyrillic keyboard introduced in iPadOS 13 or so... I complained about it in the Feedback Assistant app, and they replied "It's by design").

Thank you

The iPad is up to date (17.0.2).

I am always unable to understand why no one in their replies here is willing to confirm whether this feature has been removed in iPadOS 17 or if they see it on their iPads (with external keyboard).

This is a forum... how can we help each other if one cannot understand whether their problem is a specific one or something by design (and thus not a problem)?

I can, and will, contact Support, but there they will also not tell me if this is a removed feature or not until I have spent hours restoring my device.
