Has anyone connected their Mac Mini to their Samsung M8 monitor camera?

I have a Mac Mini (Apple M2, 2023) and am using a recently bought Samsung M8 monitor. It has a camera, which works with the monitor itself, but does not seem to connect to the Mac mini.

I am using an Apple Thunderbolt 4 Pro Cable (USB-C to USB-C specifically for this kind of data) that I have just purchased directly from Apple, but the camera still doesn’t appear on my Mac. I’ve tested the port with my iPhone and that connects, so the port is fine.

I’ve tried connecting the camera with FaceTime, Photo Booth and Zoom but it’s not there. I’ve restarted my Mac too. I’ve chatted to Apple and they have suggested updating from Ventura 13.5.2 to 13.6, which I’m in the process of doing plus user a different user admin.

Has anyone else connected this camera to their Mac? Any other suggestions would be much appreciated!

Hey there Claire Gold Coast,

We'd like to help by ruling out some basics, along with confirming more details about what's happening:

  1. You mentioned that the same port works on your Mac to detect your iPhone, but not the monitoring system. Are you connecting your iPhone using the same cable?
  2. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart. Check out the section ‘Restart your Mac' here: Shut down or restart your Mac
  3. We see you have macOS 13.5 installed, but the latest version for that older macOS version is 13.6. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then update: Update macOS on Mac Please keep in mind that while you may be able to update to macOS 13.6, your Mac model may also be compatible with macOS 14. At this time, we only recommend making sure macOS 13.6 is the version installed.

Cheers!

Claire Gold Coast,

If you use any adapter, the following guidance from If your external display is dark or low resolution - Apple Support may help as well. Although the issue is different than yours, there's some great guidance there that may be useful.

"Check cables and connections

Make sure that your external display's power cable and video cable are connected securely and correctly at both ends. Learn more about how to connect a display to your Mac.

Your external display will be dark or use a lower resolution or refresh rate if your video cable or any adapter you may be using with it doesn't support the resolution and refresh rate of the display. If you're using a Thunderbolt or USB-C adapter, it must also be compliant with DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt 3, or Thunderbolt 4.

If the display is connected to a Mac laptop computer with a closed lid, make sure that the Mac is connected to power and using an external keyboard and mouse.

If your display is connected to a hub or dock, connect your display to a port directly on your Mac."

Take care.

Hi,

Thanks very much for the reply.

Yes, I’ve restarted my mac and also updated to macOS 14 but neither of these things helped.

No, I did not use the same cable to connect my iPhone, as I needed the lightning to USB-C, rather than the USB-C to USB-C I used with the camera. It is a brand new cable from Apple though, so it should work. It should be the right one too.

Thanks again!

Thanks for your reply.

I have already done that and we went through some troubleshooting steps but they didn’t help. They weren’t able to tell me if the camera was compatible.

In the end, they asked me to get in touch with Samsung support, which I had already done. Unfortunately the person I chatted with wasn’t that helpful. He also did some troubleshooting but eventually said he didn’t think the camera was compatible. I have the feeling he wasn’t entirely sure though.

So I’m still not sure if it should work.

Thanks though! :-)
