In Sonoma, when I click the desktop, my open windows disappear and a dark band surrounds the display. Clicking again removes this incredibly annoying "feature" (I assume it has a fancy name!).
How do I switch this off?

Hello, there is an switch in settings, under "desktop and dock" that disables this feature. You can change it from "always" to "just in Stage Manager". I do not have MacOS in english, but i will place here an screenshot with highlighted the switch i mean - hopefully it will help you.
