How do i unlock a my Mac after its been found?

I lost my MacBook a while ago and now its back in my possession, I've since forgotten the code I used to lock the device. I've tried unlocking my device through https://www.icloud.com/find/, but the "unlock" icon is grayed out. Am I able to unlock my device from the comfort of my home or do I have to take it into an Apple Store and consult with tech support?

iPhone 11, iOS 13

By design, it will NOT unlock a previously-locked device from the Apple-ID web site.

if you read that Apple document very carefully, it suggests that the web site may be able to reveal the lock code to you, the Apple-ID Account-holder.

This feature has a time limit. If the device was locked a long time ago, you may be forced to take your proof of purchase to Apple Store or Apple-Authorized Service Provider as ku4hx suggested. NB>> It will be ERASED and returned to you unlocked.
