Volume rocker automatically rising.

I was watching YouTube, and I noticed my volume rocker was automatically rising to max volume. I tried using the volume buttons to change this, but it was too slow to catch up. I then caught the slider and moved it myself, but the rocker fought me, and kept rising to 100%. Any chance this is a known issue?

It’s a software bug. The OS has full control over the volume. I’m certain this is not done by the mechanical buttons, but rather an internal iOS error. The buttons don’t dictate the volume with analogue control voltages, but rather send a signal to the OS, telling it to alter the volume’s status. When a button is pressed, it sends a send signal. If it continues to be pressed, it continually sends this signal until it is released, and then tells the OS to stop altering the volume’s status. This “stop sending signal” bit of info is likely where the problem originates from, but without access to the source code of iOS, this is difficult to diagnose. If it is a persistent issue within iOS 17.0.2, which affects several users, then hopefully a patch can be sent out.

Now that I understand that you didn’t actually mean the switches when you said “volume rocker”, here is some insight.

First, when you are in an app the app can control the volume. so if it was the Youtube app it had control of the volume. I can’t guess whether it was using that capability or not, but it can change the volume, and I’ve noticed that it does sometimes for ads.

There are also some other automatic volume control features. Go to Settings/FaceID & Passcode. Is the switch for Attention Aware Features on? If so the phone can get brighter and louder when you are looking at the screen, and can lower the volume and brightness when you aren’t looking at it.

It is not moving the hardware switches. Analogue, control-voltage-based devices recieve signal directly from the switch, whereas digital buttons send a digital signal that can be interpreted by the OS, and tells it to make a change. For a more thorough show of this, I built a shortcut to explain the process. The shortcut will change your phone volume to exactly 28% when it is activated. Take note of how the physical buttons do not move.
