iPhone 15 Pro Max Camera Blurry and Out of Focus

Hi All,

It seems im not having a very good experience with the new iPhone 15 Pro Max. Coming from a 14 Pro Max the pictures were great. nice and sharp, never had issues with "blur" or "grainy" photo's.

This new iPhone seems to be a downgrade in the photo's it can produce. I'm constantly getting very grainy photo's even with the slightest bit of zoom after the photo has been taken.

I have tried all resolution's etc (12mp, 24mp, 48mp HEIF & Pro Raw.) this has affected th 1x and 5x camera.

My 14 won me a few awards for photo's and consider myself fairly knowledgeable on iPhone Photography. The 15 just isn't putting out good quality images.

All photo's are stored "on device" so there is no iCloud trickery happening.

The below is an example of what I am talking about.

I am soooo annoyed about this! I purchased the iPhone 15 pro for the camera and complete disappointment so far. All photos are blurry, grainy, and just remind me of the iPod touch. Apple please fix this! Can’t figure out if this is a software problem or a hardware one!

This is happening only if you want to use ProRAW which is only meant for editing, and editing is very difficult, so it's not meant to be easy. The easy peasy camera comes if you use a 12MP lens or less like a 9MP but you still need to use the depth of field, or easier if you use a different iPhone like an iPhone SE or an iPhone 13, in fact I noticed that many are regretting having bought a 15 pro max instead of a 13

On photo mode, press hold with your finger the screen for a few seconds to pop out AE/AF LOCK in yellow print above as the screen lightens up. When you take the selfie shot and check the photo, you will notice on top left of that photo PORTRAIT is written to show that its quality is portrait although shot in photo mode. Your selfie photo looks better then. However I still miss my iPhone 7 Plus and even my iPod I bought in 2014 wherein my face on the screen (actually the whole screen itself) when doing selfie photo automatically lightens up that is why the photo looks clear, sharp, bright and my skin looks smooth.

I’m having the same issue indoor and low light images look terrible like from an old vga camera, in my opinion. What I have noticed is that my lidar sensor is very dirty from abrasion of the original silicon case, the howl area around the camera extrusions collects dirt like crazy, given that the case is so high around the cameras. Could anybody here please be so kind to check if they might use the same case? Cold this be a commonality?

I have the exact same problems. Used to take fantastic pictures with iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro Max. With 15 Pro Max it is basically impossible. Blurry, bad light, slow, ... completely useless photos. I have been in contact with Apple that claim they know the issues and that the developers is working on a solution but it's been over a month and haven't heard anything from Apple. It could be a big scandal in the making. Can't believe that this hasn't caught more attention than it has. What is Apple doing?

I guess that I'm just another voice in the wilderness of new iPhone 15 Pro Max owners stuck with a lousy camera. I upgraded from an iPhone 13 Pro and have absolutely *nothing* good to say about the iPhone 15 Pro Max camera. I'm seeing erratic color rendition, grainy texture, and fuzzy images pretty across the entire photographic spectrum. I am EXTREMELY disappointed in this alleged upgrade and hope that Apple finds the fix very soon.

I am so annoyed too! I upgraded from the iPhone 11 after photographer Peter McKinnon hailed the new iPhone 15, and the images are worse than the 11 which was bad with the front facing camera. The 15 has maybe cured me of selfies - because they turn awful after internal processing despite looking great on screen before. No WYSIWYG. (Or I have to use the side volume button to do multiple shots that would bypass processing but isn’t the easiest button to access for photo taking.) But worse, is that these supposedly amazing lenses are producing soft, blurry and grainy images. Nothing is tack sharp. Do i send the phone back? Is it just a bad one? That’s what led me to this post - I guess it’s not just mine!!!

I thought for sure I’d waited long enough that the 15 would have improved the terrible 11 front facing lens. Instead, it’s worse across the board. I only upgraded for the cameras!!

I always text my fiancée a lot while watching Netflix in my bedroom, so the atmosphere in my room is consistent and always the same. The videos I’m sending through my iPhone 15 pro are significantly more worse than my 13 promax. The front facing camera is blurry, and occasionally it tries to auto focus during the video giving a small warp effect. What an absolute disgrace

I have an OCD when it comes to new devices, so I always check everything. I never expected the selfie camera to perform so poorly. The scenario in which I am testing the selfie is tried and tested because I have clips of the past two years so it easy for me to compare. with the 15 pro I’m getting an autofocus zoom in-out effect during video recording (with selfie camera) when the room is dimly lit. This never happened on my 13PM. Also it’s more blurry than my old phone.

Well, one Apple Support chat and three Genius Bar consultations later, I have no resolution other than one tech who agreed that the 15 Pro Max camera is bad. Really bad. I, too, upgraded from my 11 Pro only for the 15 Pro Max camera, as I use it in the field every day to document biodiversity for a citizen science project. The photos are such poor quality, I can't submit most of them. While wishing I had my 11 back, all I know to do is hope that a future software update/patch will resolve the issue. Such a disappointment.

I don't know if the 15 Pro has the same camera issues as the 15 Pro Max. But, it might be worth testing it in the store, if you're still within the return window. (I've had mine less than a month but more than two weeks, so, unfortunately, returning it is not an option for me.) Wish I knew where my 11 was -- I'd trade this 15 Pro Max to have my 11 back!
