iPhone 15 Pro Max Camera Blurry and Out of Focus

Hi All,

It seems im not having a very good experience with the new iPhone 15 Pro Max. Coming from a 14 Pro Max the pictures were great. nice and sharp, never had issues with "blur" or "grainy" photo's.

This new iPhone seems to be a downgrade in the photo's it can produce. I'm constantly getting very grainy photo's even with the slightest bit of zoom after the photo has been taken.

I have tried all resolution's etc (12mp, 24mp, 48mp HEIF & Pro Raw.) this has affected th 1x and 5x camera.

My 14 won me a few awards for photo's and consider myself fairly knowledgeable on iPhone Photography. The 15 just isn't putting out good quality images.

All photo's are stored "on device" so there is no iCloud trickery happening.

The below is an example of what I am talking about.

I am soooo annoyed about this! I purchased the iPhone 15 pro for the camera and complete disappointment so far. All photos are blurry, grainy, and just remind me of the iPod touch. Apple please fix this! Can’t figure out if this is a software problem or a hardware one!

For those of you that are experiencing an issue have you tried updating to iOS 17.2 which mentions addressing some camera improvements? Because I haven’t had the experience with my 15 Pro Max that most on here are mentioning I can’t test anything out to see if it fixes the issues you all are having but hopefully someone will chime in if they see an improvement.

I sell a lot of items on eBay and take tons of photos regularly. I’ve noticed the iPhone 15 pro max photos are extremely grainy. I just bought this phone a couple weeks ago and it’s disappointing. Further away photos seem ok but when I really need to zoom in on detail it’s very grainy. Personally I think my iPhone 12 Pro Max had better quality when zooming in. I hope apple fixes this

Just got the iPhone 15 pro max me and my friend were testing out the cameras he has a iPhone 13 we started to take photos to compare them , his were ten times better my camera was set to 24 mp and his was 12mp his looked sharper my we’re granny.

i thought it was just my eyes . So we decided to take a photo of each others eye with the same lighting and angle I couldn’t even see detail in his eye on his phone you could see I’m smiling back in the reflection of my eye on his camera. Apple needs to short this out fast I think is a condescending issue with the camera software but either way it’s 1500 euro phone this shouldn’t happen

Note that regardless of what the camera is set to, you will only see 24 MP photos in bright conditions and only in 1x mode.

The native lenses on a 15 Pro Max shoot in .5x (ultra-wide), 1x and 5x (telephoto) mode.

The 2x zoom is actually extracted from a 1x photo; technically it's a digital zoom but isn't as lossy as usual because it's starting from a 24 MP image rather than the 12 MP image created when you shoot with the 5x lens.

Still, it isn't a straight optical zoom so it may indeed look a bit more harsh than the purely optical 2x lens on older iPhones, but it's better than only providing 1x and 5x.

FIXED!!!

OK everyone just wanted to give you an update on my Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max RAW image issues. I spent a good amount of time on a tech-support, shooting various levels of images while they were linked directly to my phone and also desktop. We went through multiple shooting scenarios and they agreed there was definitely an issue. The tech-support for Apple set me up with an appointment at our local Apple dealer. Met with them yesterday they ran a basic diagnostics that showed that the camera group was Not functioning correctly. They changed out the camber group and I’ve been testing the camera since. As of now, the issue with raw imagery seems to be fixed. The quality of the coming through at high resolution are fantastic. So if you are like me, and you may have been one of the early preorders and first deliveries for the iPhone 15 Pro Max then you may have a phone with a bad camera set. go online to tech-support. Give them access to your phone while you were shooting something and let them clearly see there is an issue. They will run through various photo set up scenarios and formatting. They will also try to run diagnostics and come up empty. At that point, they will set you up with an appointment with an Apple retailer to look at the phone in more depth. by the way, PS,,, with the early phones having screen issues scratching very quickly and easily. I also had them change the screen while they were already in the phone. They did this at no additional charge. Thank you Apple.

But was it the same optical zoom? You can't tell without looking at the photo info unless it was .5x or 1x, and even then, what resolution?

At 24 MP on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, a photo may seem "grainier" but that's actually detail being lost as compared to a photo at 12 MP or below.

There are myriad factors that need to be taken into account, including ISO setting and shutter speed.

Does anyone here have the lenses covered by the case? I got one of those cases that has the camera area cut out but has a second small cover for the lenses only. I wondered then and now if it is contributing to the distortion of the pics that makes them so “low light effect.” It would seem not because my video is good and my burst mode is better and selfie camera is terrible by far, but ?

I went to the Applestore at the weekend and got the entire camera unit on my 15 Pro replaced. The pictures are still mushier at higher ISO values than on my 13 Pro under comparable lighting conditions.

My problem with the front focus has improved slightly, but the basic problem is that the focus range is so small due to the large sensor that it is almost impossible to get two people next to each other in focus at the same time unless their eyes are exactly the same distance from the lens.
