sonoma print to pdf not working

I updated to Sonoma 14.0 on my Mac Mini 2018 and now I cannot print to a pdf. The problem happens from every application that I've tested. In each case when I attempt to print to a pdf file the app will freeze, I get a rainbow busy cursor, then after a minute or two the application becomes reponsive against, but nothing is printed, and I can then cancel the print operation and continue. Every attempt to print to a pdf file produces this result.

Surely I'm not the only one experiencing this?

In years of using a mac I've never had a problem printing to a pdf file. It's a real inconvience.

I signed out/signed back into my Apple account and my pdf problem was not resolved. When I try to print a pdf file, is says 'cant' print' ... because 'no pages were selected'. The print dialogue box is also strange, with the 'current page' and the 'page range' greyed out. Frustrating to say the least. I'm hoping Sonoma 14.1 resolves these issues and quickly.

My Desktop on OS Mac 14.1.1 (Sonoma) won't print a pdf. I get a message that no pages were selected. It won't print any of my pdf's. Christmas is coming and I need my Mac to print music for my church musicians! I see I'm not the only one with that problem. Is Apple doing anything to fix it? Sonoma seems to be the problem as I never had trouble printing pdfs before.

An addendum : My laptop is on OS 14.0. I emailed the pdf to myself, downloaded it on my laptop and it printed. So the problem must be with OS 14.1.1. Is Apple doing anything to rectify this problem?

Have done all suggested above and still not working. Seems to be a flaw if an update suddenly negatively impacts printing. This is the third time I have had trouble with PDF printing on my iMac running latest updates and each time it's due to an update. I'm frustrated. I just need to print one document, not reprogram a computer each time I need to print.

Hi John,

I have exactly this effect on Sonoma (MacBook Pro M1), but I had it also for years on previous macOS versions and on Intel Macs (https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat-discussions/get-quot-filter-failed-quot-error-message-when-trying-to-print-to-hp-laserjet-p1102w-printer/m-p/14175441/page/2).

If I look into the printer log I see

/usr/libexec/cups/filter/pstoraster: line 54: /usr/local/bin/gs: Operation not permitted

Do you know if I need to re-install PSNormalizer to re-enable PDF printing out of Acrobat? Any known fixes?

Thanks ...Peter

I'm not a techie but I've done the OS installs up to 14.1.2 ... and have searched for updates for Acrobat and found non (I'm on Pro 2017). The only option for me is to open PDF files with Acrobat Reader ... and then I can print them. Just a pain in the neck for sure. Apple does not seem to care about this nor does Adobe.

Hi Peter,

If you have had this problem on OSes before Sonoma, it's not related to PSNormalizer. PSNormalizer was only removed starting in Sonoma.

The filter failed is a different problem, and one workaround is to print using Preview. I am not sure about other workarounds, due to the PSNormalizer changes, but it may be helpful to make sure you are using the most recent Acrobat and HP drivers. Hope this helps.

what was your resolve here...?

I had the same issue on an M1 Mini running Sonoma. Neither the existing version of Acrobat Reader nor Preview would print PDFs showing a "Filter" error for our Canon MF series printer. This usually means that one needs to update the printer driver. That was done and the printer system reset, all to no avail. What did fix the issue was going to Adobe's website and downloading the freshest distribution of Acrobat Reader and installing it. Then AAR printed the PDF file just fine. - something that we had not seen for a while - we had been using Preview to get around that glitch until Sonoma stopped us cold.
