iPhone Pre-order Delivery

I pre-ordered the new iPhone around two weeks ago on September 17 and this is my first time getting an iPhone. While it is still being processed and not ready to ship yet, I was wondering if I would get an option to hold it at a carrier location once it gets shipped. If yes, is it a paid service or is it free? I will not be home during the delivery window (Oct 16 - 23) provided by Apple. Has anyone ever done this before?
