Mail app takes up to a minute to open, this is much slower than expected.

Using Monterey 12.7 on MacBookPro 2016. Sender, recipient, subject date etc. OK but content of the mail appears with long delay 30 secs to a minute. So far I have re-installed OS, de- and reinstalled Mail, closed the account and created a new one. To no avail. Network works properly, web-based email pages OK, account works properly on iPhone. What next????

Try opening the Mail app with the shift key held down.


If that doesn't help boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.


NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following; 

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts 

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files


NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

Thanks, but.... I have started in safe mood, I have de-installed the OS and reinstalled the same. I have de-installed Mail and reinstalled it, I have closed the account and opened it again, I have .... you name it, and I have grown mad! Nothing has changed, even your mail took 1 minute and a half to open.


Web version of all mail-accounts works perfect, so does my wife's mail on another MacBook on the same network What canI do?

Thank you for your, may I say, very "helpful" reply. I simply wanted to contact the community to ask for any good advise regarding my severe problem using MacMail. Obviously you did not know that I got knowledge of your message precisely by mail. Thats the reason for using mail in the first place. So, if you do not have better answers to offer, please drop this discussion. Br, Tom

Download and run Etrecheck. Be sure to give it Full Disk access before running.



Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.


Copy the report


and use the Additional Text button to paste the report in your reply.



Then we can evaluate the report to see if we can determine the cause of the problem.
