How do I remove unwanted photos from my iCloud storage?

I have a iPhone and iPad using the same Apple ID. Neither my iPhone or iPad will back up, reporting iCloud storage is full. I deleted large amounts of data off of both devices. Still neither will back ups.

my goal is to get my notes and photos to sync between the two devices. Backing them up is a minor secondary issue.

iPhone 11, iOS 17

Hello Jdigann,

Make sure you are deleting iCloud data, not device data. iCloud data is stored on servers owned by Apple, while device data is stored locally on your device. Deleting apps will not do anything, but deleting photos, videos, files stored on iCloud, GarageBand songs, etc, will free up iCloud storage.

I do not recommend installing cleaner apps, as they usually have paywalls (when an app doesn’t let you do anything on it until you subscribe to a ridiculously expensive subscription), don’t do their job very well, and potentially leak your data including private photos and videos to third parties.

Although this is the answer nobody really wants to hear about, getting more iCloud storage may be best. Getting more iCloud storage means that you don’t have to worry about having a lot photos, videos, files, etc that you may want to keep. iCloud storage is relatively cheap, especially when buying in a bundle with other Apple subscriptions with Apple One.

I hope this helped you!
