I left my phone around a friend for a short period of time with all of my security settings turned off. This person then proceeded to send $550 to my apple pay and then proceeded to send it to the phone number ***-***-****. So basically robbed me of $550. What do I need to do in order to retrieve my money back? This has made my stomach sick.

You can also file a police report for theft, especially since you know the thief.
For the future, do not ever lend your device to anyone or share your Apple ID or passwords.
If you have concerns about an Apple Pay transaction, contact Apple.
You can ask the person at the other number for the funds back. That's about all that you can do.
Well, you can also ask your friend why they sent money.
Or, ask yourself why you had so much money on Apple Cash and why you gave someone your unlocked device.
