Will an Apple Watch with cellular connectivity still receive text messages (ie: 2FA codes) even if the associated phone is dead?

Apple Watch pairing to iPhone I'm getting an Apple Watch with its own number on one carrier and I have an iPhone on a separate carrier, can they be paired and still work? Apple Watch with cellular function should get SMS messages directly if its paired iPhone is not reachable.
