iPhone 12 mini stopped charging due to overheating — battery issue?

My iPhone 12 mini often stops charging because the iPhone is too hot (gets error message that it stopped charging due to high temperature). I have removed open apps before charging and still get this message. Can it be a battery issue? I saw a suggestion to check the battery and I did; the evaluation said no problem with the battery.

Hi ratska,

If you haven't updated to iOS 17.0.3, you'll need to do so, as it looks to address this issue:

About iOS 17 Updates - Apple Support

iOS 17.0.3
This update provides important bug fixes, security updates, and addresses an issue that may cause iPhone to run warmer than expected.

Back up first, and follow the steps here:

Thanks but that link doesn’t address my problem. My iPhone will charge to 100% but sometimes it stops charging, not just at 80%, because it’s too hot. It gets hot on both a wireless charger plate/disk and using a charger cable so it’s not the charging device but the phone that overheats.

battery info in Settings says I have 86% capacity so not ready to replace yet.

Hi ratska,

A couple of other tips, which may help you out.

1. If you have a case on your iPhone, try removing that to see if it's inhibiting the heat dissolution.

2. Make sure that your iPhone is on a hard surface while charging, like a table or desk. Not a soft surface, like a bed or couch.

We hope these also help you out.

Take care!
