I have an old (2014) IMAC with Big Sur OS. After turning on computer in the morning, any websites I try to load take several minutes to load. The same thing happens when not using the computer for a few hours. This has been going on for a very long time. Is there something I can do or install to speed it up? I am not tech savvy. So I would need very simple instructions. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

iMac 21.5″, macOS 11.7

  1. Unplug the modem/router and wait 2-3 minutes then plug it back in and give it about 5-10 minutes to fully start up.
  2. Next restart the iMac
  3. Finally test

By chance do you have ANY third party:

  1. Antivirus apps installed
  2. Cleaning apps installed
  3. Security apps installed
  4. VPN apps installed

if so please uninstall each following the the developers instructions!!!!!!

If the problem persists please call AppleCare. If you are in the USA the phone number is (800) 273-2275

If rkaufmanm87's suggestion doesn't help download and run Etrecheck. Be sure to give it Full Disk access before running.

Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Copy the report

and use the Additional Text button to paste the report in your reply.

Then we can evaluate the report to see if we can determine the cause of the problem.

Thank you for your response. However, as I wrote, I am completely in he dark on how the computer, modems or router works. I have what I presume is a router and modem that my cable/internet provider installed for me when I signed up with them. I haven't touched them since being installed. I wouldn't know how to turn them on or off. I am very nervous to try to mess with them in case I lose everything (internet, cable and home phone.) I do thank you for trying to help a technically uninformed senior.
